Going to the Library....Books!

I went to the library today with Hubby. We had not stepped into the library for probably 15 years!  They had totally rebuilt it from the ground up.  Brand new thanks to tax payers money.....State of the art...self checkout, all computerized now. They have at least a hundred computers for public use with free printing.  All kinds of siting space....windows...couches.. even a snack area with cold drinks and food in vending machines. I was amazed!

As I was looking through the books I realized that I had not read a book in a very long time.  With TV, computer, and IPad access, I just quit reading books.  I use to read a lot. I did  find two books to checkout as did my husband.  He just retired two weeks ago and also had not read a good book for many years when he was so busy working. Now he should  have time to relax and read.

My questions for you is:    Do you find that with the internet and iPad and computer you do not read books any more or at least much less?  Just wondering if it is a side effect of the stimulation that the  computer provides.

Re: Going to the Library....Books!

I only read books I check out at the library.  It's nice you can request a certain book and then they notify you when it's available.

I read mostly on my Kindle, although I also go to the library a couple of times a year.

Re: Going to the Library....Books!

I love my library and love to read. I belong to our Book Club.  I'm on the executive board of Friends of the Library.  We do fundraising and have a bi-annual used book sale for the library. Next week, we are sponsoring the annual picnic and lawn concert. I love that I can reserve on-line and will be notified via e-mail when my book is ready for pick-up.  As much as I love to turn the pages of a book, if it comes in e-form, I'll download it to my Kindle.  My Kindle is easier to carry to work than is a large book.  By the way, I'm retired but used to be a Reading Specialist.Woman Very Happy

Happy Reading to all.  docsgirl

I've always been a bookworm, but lately, I do read a lot on the computer.  There's nothing like a nice tactile book, though, with rustly pages...

I am an avid reader and always have been. I mostly buy my books from amazon.

I read only books...those things that you hold in your hand and turn the pages. :-)

Re: Going to the Library....Books!

Figure out how to download ebooks onto your iPad, @SeaMaiden.  I imagine your county uses something called Overdrive like mine does.  It's one of the best things ever.  If a book is available, you can download it at 1 a.m.  and you don't have to physically return the book -- no fines ever.

I don't read 2-3 books a week anymore but do read a great deal, probably 2-3 books a month now.  That's probably because of the internet.

Re: Going to the Library....Books!

I probably read more now that I have an iPad.  Just different types of reading now.  😊

Be be sure to ask your librarians about resources for tablet owners!  My,library offers free access to thousands of books and magazines.  I still check out print books, but also I love to get e-books and e-magazines.

@SeaMaiden I read at least 2-3 books a week (in a good week) that I borrow from our local library, I also have several books on my Kindle.
