I volunteer at O'Hare Airport, Info Desk, try to go out of my way to complement travelers, outfit, hair, shoes, smile, etc, sure helps to ease their stress during what's usually a frustrating time, btw it also makes me feel good knowing that just maybe I brightened someone's day

I have a philosophy that if I'm thinking something nice about someone else, whoever and wherever that may be, I make sure I say it. People need all of the support and encouragement they can get. I have a friend who truly does see the best in people, regardless of the layers you may have to peel to reveal it. I aspire to be that way!
@AliJoi5 - Thanks! - At my age I'll take what I can get. Sure made me feel good at my age (63). I think he was just truly being a gentleman. I stopped a young man in Target the other day and told him how nice he looked. I, too, try to give compliments when I can.

I have always found it hard to receive compliments. I like to give them but feel uncomfortable receiving them.

I probably would have said thank you and thought that was like a cheesy flirtation- pick up line. I find older gentleman tend to do this and they think it's charming.
I appreciate a more direct compliment like " You really have a beautiful smile".
@LUVNLIFE - no, don't think he was flirting, he was clearly younger than me. I just think he was being kind - but it really made my day.

I always try to pay someone a compliment. I'm sure they appreciate it, but it makes me more happy to give it 😊

What a lovely gesture ..... and it's so important to be gracious about receiving the compliment.
Some people cannot do this. It reminds me of talking to a friend years ago that had recently met a new lady and he had hopes for the relationship.
Weeks later, to my surprise, he had ended it. He said it was hard to be with someone who couldn't receive .... she couldn't receive compliments, small gifts, actually, anything ..... and he didn't want to be with that kind of person. Food for thought, eh?

tinkrbl44, maybe she felt she did not deserve compliments nor gifts. I know someone like that. it comes from being insecure. sad, but some people do feel that way.

I had an embarrassing experience complimenting someone once lol. I was at a party and there was a 20-something guy who I kept looking at because he reminded me of someone, and I couldn't figure out who it was. Finally it hit me and I said to him, "Did anyone ever tell you that you look like Justin Timberlake?" He asked me if that was a good thing, and I said, "Oh yeah. He's hot." OMG I immediately felt like an idiot thinking I looked like some old lady flirting with this kid!

Oh, no doubt about it .... low self esteem .... she didn't love herself. Well, she needed to do some growth work on herself. I hope my friend breaking up with her was a real wake up call. He's such a nice and loving guy.
