Re: Gift Not Well Received

[ Edited ]

My freezer is near full, but I would find a place for those items, offer them to a neighbor, or cook it right away. I’ve had not so perfect gifts in the past, but we were taught to always say thank you, and to be gracious. Since many of these are individually packed and sealed, some would fit into small spaces in the freezer.

I know a lot of people that they barely have food each week, so I feel blessed with a couple months of food in my pantry and freezer. It’s an expensive gift and hate to see that attitude. Say thank you and be gracious.

Is she the type that complains?? My mother would complain about everything...even about things I thought she would love...even things she had mentioned she would like and forgot she had mentioned she would like and then didn't like. I just couldn't win.

My brother could do no wrong.

@ruthbeWe must have been separated at birth. Lol. Christmas every year was stressful about gifts. They were just odd gifts. Usually seasonal or something that wasn't in the stores, like white handbag in December.. a plastic shower cap like hotels, lol I would hear about the gifts that failed to please for years. She couldn't remember what she ate or did 2 hours earlier but the gifts that offended her stayed with her for years. God love her, lol. She was a character. . She usually wanted clothes. Just clothes. Lol. No real direction in what catagory. But it was always a color that wasn't in style or for sale. But she is fussy and very hard to buy for. I alsways seemed to buy her something she loved but her grandkids whom she adored and loved couldn't buy anything right. Nothing. And yes, it was my brother who received all the praise.

I dealt with such a MIL many years ago...you could predict the negative response before you even bought the gift. Finally just gave her photos of the grandkids and her son. But not in frames; she didn't like the ones I bought. Some people simply don't want to be pleased and admit you did something good in what you picked out for them.

I've had a few of those in my life at times, when they just will not be pleased, they think they have some sort of control by withholding approval. Crazy, but I think it's a power thing.

Either that, or what I call a lack of emotional generousity.

I think your BIL was a jerkball for coming at you/your husband with 'Why did you send that?'.

I'm vegan, but would still appreciate it because no one else in my family is.

If it's something you enjoyed, then you know the quality and went ahead and sent it to her---thoughtfully.

Someone who recieves a gift they don't like should keep their pie hole shut and at a later date hint that they can't use something like that again.

It seems like a great gift to me, but tis the season...

My mother-in-law to be, passed away before I ever met her. Instead, when I married, I got stepchildren. I thought I was a thoughtful gift-giver, and took on the role of shopping for them. They made snarky comments about every gift. After a few years of this, I told my husband that it was up to him to shop for his family! The gifts got much worse after that point. Too bad...I tried.

Luckily I never had someone come back at me for a gift I bought them.

But I was on the receiving end of some snarky gifts. Once I got a birthday gift from my MIL that was wrapped in tinfoil. It was not a food gift.

Sometimes a negative response to a gift says more about the recipient than the giver. I was taught to accept the gift, smile, and say thank you. Period.

It is not on you. You are a kind thoughtful person to have bought the gift in the first place. I am vegan so it would not have been appropiate for me BUT ONCE AGAIN IT IS NOT YOUR FAULT. You intentions were good giving what you enjoy and sharing with others.

Sadly I have experienced similar situations. I have resorted to Amazon cards. Let them buy what they want. Takes a bit of fun out of it for me but in the end it is what works.

What a thoughtful gift! I would have been appreciative.
