Getting Work Done on house not body! Rant!

As I have posted before we are in throes of moving back to CA so called builder  - who originally gutted and redone our house - been here 14 years - now needs few minor repairs so called same builder as he did good job.  He is local.

He was coming last Thurs No show - then  Fri a.m. No show so definitely today Mon 8 a.m.  At 11.00 a.m. DH in town and sees builder with his 2 men sitting in our local bar - they have two big open doors and you can see inside from the street - with shots and beer.  DH told them we have been waiting for them since 8 a.m. to be told 'we're having a meeting be there in a min'.  Now noon and I can hear their truck!  That's my Monday!

He is treating you like your business isn't important.  I would call someone else.

There's no way I would hire him, obviously his business is too profitable to consider your job that important.  What has happened to people who are grateful for the work and the opportunity?  The attitude is utterly amazing to me!!

So now you have drunken workers doing "minor repairs" on your house.  Not only that, drinking on your time & w/your $$$$$$!

Re: Getting Work Done on house not body! Rant!

14 yrs ago is a long time.  Things change in a shorter time period than that.  Surely there must be someone else to do the work.  I think the writing is on the wall with this guy.

I had a contractor work for me in 2009/2010.  He was on time every day and did a good job.  Fast forward.  I just look him up this morning and he is in jail for drugs and possession of a firearm for a restricted individual.

I'll make a bet with you that your guy won't show up when he's supposed to, and he won't finish on time.  You should get a contract with all the t's crossed and i's dotted.

I would have told him to forget it.  Obviously he doesn't want your business.  As others have mentioned, a lot can change in 14 years.

That just means he isn't interested in your business.  So, find someone else.

@dulwich  After the first TWO no-shows, you didn't get the hint that he wasn't reliable?  The red flag was flying before your husband found the guy in a bar this morning. You should have been interviewing other contractors for the job! Time is of the essence and you've been wasting your own time.

This builder is now semi-retired only takes on 'small jobs' that is why we went back to him.  He and his girlfriend have been to our home on quite a few occasions at parties, etc.  This is a very small town everyone knows everyone.

Anyhow DH just told him to leave but we did pay him monies for materials so that will be the next battle - or not.

I'm on the builder's side with this.  He gave you a message loud and clear, he did by not showing up because he assumed that like 99% of home owners, you would just find someone else.  Whethere or not you have socialized with the man or not is totally irrelevant.  Business is business. Even in a small town.   What you call a small job might not be what he calls a small job.  14 years is ancient history and he never promised you life time service.  He should return the money for the supplies or give you the supplies.
