Reminds me of when I got my license renewed during the pandemic.  The mothers that drove their kids for a written drivers test or interview were not allowed in the room.  Some of them really got upset about it.   I guess it's the first true realization that your son is growing up.

First of all they have to find a job (one job) that will pay enough for the kids to be on their own.  I don't know where you all are but in Reno the rent is so high that some people have 3 roommates.  No one should have to work several jobs to live.  Honestly the way the rent is here that I think that Reno thinks everyone here has a job paying 60 dollars an hour.  It is sad that there are no starter apartments or houses.  Not sure what they expect people to do.  I am noticing that most young people are not that interested in purchasing a car either.  People should work to live and have fun not live to work.  Anyway this is what I am noticing.

Phoenix is our nearest city and there are huge new microchip and AI industries that are unable to meet their hiring needs for big ticket jobs; they have instituted high school programs to train applicants.

Older Gen Xer here...

I realize that the world is different than when I graduated college in the late 1980s...

But when I went job searching, I took an entry level job, even though I had a degree. I got my experience from the ground up.
I put in the time. I worked late and came in on weekends when it was necessary.
As my experience expanded, I applied for higher level jobs, and moved up.
If I couldn't move forward in the company, I looked outside the company.

I think today, kids are not taught that you have to start from the ground and work your way up. I think they expect to get the high income job right away.

Of course, if you have a medical degree, or an engineering degree, your career path is different.

But for most of us, you have to put in the time. I was never afraid of hard work. I think a lot of kids today have not been taught this growing up.

@Marienkaefer2  Your experience is similar to mine.  I worked my way up the ladder from an entry-level position.  A little physical labor was a good teacher.

Re: Gen Z Job Seekers

I actually saw this in person at one of my jobs this past week. A teenage girl who will be working there one day a week brought her father to the interview and he actually sat in on the interview.

So bizarre and inappropriate. My boss shouldn't have allowed it, but let's just say she really struggles with setting boundaries.

I wonder if these overbearing  ridiculous"parents" insist on being in the room "the first time"...

You know...to guide them.....

I wouldn't be surprised if some parents tried.  How can children learn and grow when they are not allowed to fail or make mistakes.  No one starts at the top (no pun intended).  It takes trial and error to learn how to get and keep a job..

I asked my dad for some advice when I was creating my cover letter for job applications. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That was almost 50 years ago.
