I won't buy a front loader - way too expensive and I think they are overrated. My brother purchased one about a year ago - very expensive one- and he hates it! My top loader I have had for 10 years now and it gets the job done. This is not where I want to spend a lot of money. All lthe hype about "environmentally" friendly washers is laughable.

Love our full-size front load stacked washer dryer. I bring my mother's king comforter home with me to wash because this has such capacity. Totally happy with it for ten years. It was top of the line then.

Yes, a lot has changed.
I checked with Consumer Reports and Good Housekeeping last year when I bought a new washer and dryer. I got the top rated LG washer that had been on the market for a few years and had come down in price and I got it on sale over the Fourth of July of Memorial Day. I've had it just over a year and have been very happy with it.
It does get my clothes clean, but I do have to use dish soap or stain remover on any stains that might be greasy, which I didn't always have to do with my (very old) washer that the LG washer replaced. Not a big deal, though.

Whirlpool front-loader. About 7 years old or so. Never a problem.
1st of month 2/3 cup bleach with the "clean machine" cycle.
Middle of month white vinegar with clean machine cycle to remove any soap residue which can cause odor even if you leave the door open.
Never had mold. Also don't use much standard detergents; use Nellie's mostly so we don't get sudsing and buildup.
Also don't use fabric softener.

Top loader all the way.
I have owned both front and many top loaders.
The front loader didn't work well for me at all. It would not spin most of the time. One night i stayed up all night just hoping it would spin out the entire load. It never did. That machine went out the back door faster than you could say my name after that one last no spin again cycle.
I love my Speed Queen top loader. My washer has an agitator. It cleans excellently. It is made here in the USA, it is a well constructed washer.
I have owned so many top loader washers over the past 50 yrs and for me Speed Queen is #1.

I hear about Speed Queens but never see advertising or the machines in stores.

Tansy,
Speed Queen is only sold by speciality stores. You have to go to their web site and there is an area that you click on to find out where they are sold in your area. Where I live (which is a very small state) there is only 2 stores that sell Speed Queen. the closest store to me was about 20 miles (and many stop lights).
The washer drum is stainless steel, and it has all metal parts internally.
my washer has a double rinse button. I have short wash, gentle wash, regular wash. That is all I need for me.
Speed Queen also makes an push button washer with more load offers. For me, as long as I have regular wash, and gentle wash that is enough. I have a manuel dial.

I currently have a Hotpoint - not crazy about it because of the low water levels. I'm doing laundry today and I'm on the 9th load because with the water so low the loads are tiny even on the largest setting. I have been washing since I got up this morning and I still have 2 more loads to do.I don't see that there is any water savings if you are washing twice or three times as many loads.
The cycles tend to be longer and that is using more electricity.
