This is horrendous. Several people died. Who on earth designed this bridge? Lawsuits will abound. Whoever is responsible for this disaster deserves to pay.

It sounds like the university itself was involved in the bridge's design.  This is from its news release on Tuesday:

"The 174-foot, 950-ton section of the bridge was built adjacent to Southwest Eight Street using Accelerated Bridge Construction (ABC) methods, which are being advanced at FIU's Accelerated Bridge Construction University Transportation Center (ABC-UTC). This method of construction reduces potential risks to workers, commuters and pedestrians and minimizes traffic interruptions. The main span of the FIU-Sweetwater UniversityCity Bridge was installed in a few hours with limited disruption to traffic over this weekend."

It seems they were conducting a "stress" test for the new bridge, and it collapsed.

Wouldn't they normally close off the road for this?

I saw a video of the making of this bridge. They brought it one piece. (pre-built)

sad

missy1,

Do you think arrogance prevailed and they figured they had a fail-safe test to conduct?  Could these people have been so short-sighted or unenlightened to have proceeded with the testing without closing off the road beneath?

@ValuSkr  The university was involved but the actual construction was done by Munilla Construction and  Figg Bridges.  Both have been cited in other projects for safety issues, according to the Miami  New Times.

@RoughDraft,

Coul not agree more. I wonder why we still have Roman aqueducts working, bridges, the tracing of the vía Apia is impecable and the list could last forever with constructions of these ancient civilizations.

I also wonder if our modern architects and engineers would be able to built  gothic cathedrals, yes like the ones from the  XIII century 🌻

@missy1 Yes you would think they would close the roads for safety testing.  Unbelievablle in this day and age.

The bridge was not handed over to the City of Miami and  was still in the hands of the construction company. It was just installed last weekend.  They will pay for this senseless tragedy.

I thought this just happened in third world countries.  More and more it feels like we're becoming one.

'I'm back'............Internet modem has been out; hooked into Xfinity.  Working right now, but who knows..........

'Anyway':  Seems to me that we aren't as 'smart' as we think we are.

Aren't as 'smart' as we used to be (hundreds/thousands of years ago).

I believe that they were more conscientious in those days.  Making things that would last for centuries; perhaps 'forever'.  Well, that was their ultimate goal in those days.

'More or less', 'Right or wrong', 'In general', and 'Just thinking out loud ' (as usual).
