@qualitygalWe walked about a quarter mile to our school bus stop, and stood on the front porch of a small grocery store that wasn't open that early, but kept us dry if it was raining out.

I attended a rural school. Everyone rode a bus. We had long bus routes that covered a lot of countryside.

Till  6th grade walked to school, walked home for lunch, walked back to school, walked back home. 

From 7th grade on walked a couple blocks but had lunch in cafeteria. Or sometimes snuck out w/friends to hamburger place but eventually in high school got nailed by truant officer so that ended that.

Elementary school, I walked from kindergarten through 6th grade. I walked home for lunch most days also.

I walked to elementary school-grades kindergarten-8 th grade, maybe 1/4 mile or so. High school was on a bus about 6 miles away.

We always walked to and from school.  If the weather was bad my mom would give us a ride and would include as many neighborhood kids as we could fit!   It was a good mile for us too.......uphill......both ways......with no shoes.  (Sorry I couldn't help it, LOL)

Growing up in Northern Vt, we were just short of a mile from the school.  We would walk for the morning session, walk home for lunch and walk back for the afternoon session and then walk home.  And there were very very few snow days.  Unless it was a blizzard, school was open.  I remeber them selling those small carton's of milk for snack time.  Girls could not wear pants, so you wore a snow suit over your dress or pants and hung them up in the closet in the back of the class.

One mom took us on bad days in Jr. Hi., but elementary, we hoofed it. No matter how high the snow was.

Walked my whole school years, even through college and teaching school. didn't hurt, not sure it did anything good, but I had no bus or car available.

I grew up in a city and walked to and from school, including for lunch, everyday.  Mom knew all the shop owners along my route and they would watch out for me and I knew I could go to any of them if needed.  She was home with a new baby and had to get 5 of us out the door for school.  Because of ages, I was the only one in grade school at the time.  I think it taught me independence and being street smart at an early age.  Today, however, I think things would be different. Back then, we new everyone from the neighborhood and people watched out for each other, now not so much.
