Elementary age (when you were)

Did you walk to school, or ride a bus, or driven by a parent?

One mom took us on bad days in Jr. Hi., but elementary, we hoofed it. No matter how high the snow was.

My old elementary school is now a community theater.  It's a beautiful art deco building - I'm glad they found a new purpose for it.

My mother never learned how to drive so I either hoofed it, depended on neighbors, or took a city bus.  I had all the bus schedules memorized by the time I was in 3rd grade and could get anywhere in town on a bus.

Bussed, from the first day of Kindergarten to the last day of HS.

I walked to school for grade school and took the Septa trolley to high school. Septa sold books of tickets at the reduced student rate of $.25 per ticket which we bought at the 69th Street terminal.

Interesting question.  My brother and I were talking about this just the other day.  He lives in the same house in which we grew up many years ago., so he sees the change.  We all walked to school and back, and for some, that was a good mile away, and we could watch the parade of kids walking by over the years.  But now, ALL the kids are driven. He hasn’t seen a child walk past the house in years.

We walked no matter the weather. Most schools didn't allow kids who lived within 8 blocks of school to eat at school until I was in 3rd grade so we walked the 4 blocks home and back for lunch too. That really shows my age.

Re: Elementary age (when you were)

I walked to school. I lived in Chicago and when I went to grammar school (1952-1960) there were no busses.  Everyone went to neighborhood schools. In high school, we could buy bus passes to ride the CTA busses for half fare. I usually walked to high school too, because i lived about a mile away and by the time the bus got to the stop closest to my house it was usually packed, especially on really cold days.
