I'm 80+, and really no more or less perfect than ever. And I live alone, so once in a while I run into a situation that is difficult for me to handle. Only once I've been locked out. I had a door blow shut from an unexpected gust of wind and found myself outside on an extremely warm day with a storm approaching. Thank goodness a kind neighbor helped me out, and I will always be appreciative.   If someone needs me, I am happy to be there for them.  Sorry you're offended by an opportunity to help.  Perhaps you should move away where there are no older peope. I try hard to be prepared, but being the less than perfect human being I am, anything is possible.  If a neighbor of mine needed money I would gladly help them out, and if they should fail to pay me back I will survive without malice.  And yes, my Dad taught me never to be in a situation without available money.  But the unexpected can happen to anyone, any time.

Couldn't have said it better.  My parents are both in their 80s and they have wonderful neighbors.  Have helped them out a few times.  I am there most everyday but cannot be there every moment, nor is it necessary.  Good neighbors are the best, they certainly were raised right.

@sunshine45  You are good at math! Just reading how much to put in is confusing and I would forget to do it every week.

Think I’ll just leave it in the bank and gain a bit of interest!

I always shake my head when people ask how do "children" "let" their parents. . .

One of the biggest problems is you have no authority to make your parents do what is good for them or what they need to do.  You can't unless you can have them legally declared icompetent.  And that's not always an easy thing to do for many reasons, one being they can fool the judge.

In some areas there are social service programs that can assist. For instance, doing well checks. Also, there are transportation companies that service the infirm and elderly. Perhaps a referral to one of those. I am not suggestion the OP do this, only to reinforce what is already said about about the daughter and the info. Very sad.

Re: Do You Keep Extra Money In Your House

We don’t keep large sums of cash in the house after we were burglarized. I do have some stashed in several hidden places but not much. If you are concerned about her, I would contact her daughter and let her know about the money issue. Perhaps she is forgetting where her money is or being overcharged by a taxi driver or others. At her age, many are too trusting and will pay any amount they are told they owe, even if it is unreasonable.

I have a piggy bank but I don't keep cash around.  DH does.

It's surprising how that spare change adds up, though.

Re: Do You Keep Extra Money In Your House

2 questions here

1. do you keep money in your house just in case

2.  should you be responsible for bailing out your older neighbor over and over again?  financially and otherwise.

I think there comes a time when the OP needs to discuss this with the daughter or someone else .  Is the daughter abdicating her responsibilities to the neighbor?

Yes, I keep some cash in glass jar but not inside my house. I have it stashed in a secret place in my yard so if my house burns down or blows away then at least I'll have some money.
