I mean like 5 years or more?

Why not? Gives you time to chase them off if you change your mind.

That would be a "NO". Something around a year to two is normal, I think.

HaHa...I just think if you are engaged that long something isn't right...something is missing.

I have no problem with a couple living together for 5 years or more but an engagement is a promise to marry, right? Yes I would think something is amiss in the relationship with a 5 year engagement.

I guess I don't.

My husband proposed 6 days after meeting and we married 9 months later, the delay being he was in the military or the wedding would have been sooner.

The marriage lasted 44 years until his death.

I knew a couple who became engaged in the late 1950's. They married within the last 10 years and both died within the last 5 years.

Personally I think a year is a sufficient amount of time to be engaged.

Each couple is different. What works for one, won't for another.

Some people are engaged for a short time, and the marriage lasts forever.

Other times, not.

Just the opposite is true too.

Just because one couple is engaged for years and years, and years, is not guarantee that the marriage will last.

Also, the couple may have their reasons for having a long engagement. It could be for financial, or whatever.

There is no hard and fast "rule" on how long a couple should be engaged for.

Yes...that is a different situation. Engagement means the relationship is moving to a more serious phase.
