I had Kitchen Aid dishwasher also that died.  Had it a long time and loved it.  I checked out dishwashers on the Lowe's site and then went into the store.  I ended up buying a LG dishwasher that is totally plain on front except for a touchpad.  You can use just the top rack for washing if you have a small load, it plays a tune when the cycle is finished, the best feature is it does not dry the dishes with the heating coil on the bottom but dries with a fan.  The drying is the best because everything dries except if you have cups on the top that have indents that hold the water, which I do.  I love this appliance.  It also starts on maximum time run and if the dishes have been pre-rinsed it automatically lowers the run time.  It has its own disposal if dishes are not pre-rinsed but this takes a longer run time.
