my mom and daughter are currently in london and said that there are many events there commemorating this period in history.

I would imagine so. The UK was quite threatened by the enemy forces back then. Folks here just couldn't believe that the USA was also on the enemies radar. Long distance bombers and rockets were being tested to use on us. The enemy had to be stopped. It's a day that we shouldn't forget. As many called those who lived it, the greatest generation that ever lived.
