Without a doubt, it just shows what kind of a person you really are. I know kids do stupid stuff, but they must learn to take responsibility for their actions or they will continue to make bad choices and be worthless in society.

Sounds like blackhole99 , if not a parent, would be a great one.

We need more parents that know what is right and just do it, rather than worry about their own comfort or that of their child.

If children aren't "busted" in their wrongdoings early on, it tends to continue, and they step it up a notch each time. Whatever they get away with once, is nothing more than a temptation to do it again.

I could turn my kid in, and while not easy or without pain, it is an attitude and a fact that many parents aren't brave enough to face.

I'm also in the camp that if you get yourself into trouble, you get yourself out (with the law). Don't call me for bale or the money for a lawyer. It would take me knowing for absolute that you couldn't have committed the crime accused of (like you couldn't have robbed that bank, because you were with me at that time, kind of thing) before I'd go to bat for you.

That is just sad.

Not only sad, but dumb, that child would learn no lesson about what they did, parents need too teach their kids, this would not be a good parent that would not turn them in.

Stealng a car and getting into bar fights are not victimless crimes however I'm not surprised by your reply.

Re: Could You Turn Your Child In

Our responsibility to our children is to raise them with love and prepare them to be adults.  I wanted to do my best to prepare them to live in this world on their own when mom and dad are no longer around.  They need to be helped to develop good habits.  That is where we come in.

I realize not everyone had these kind of parents and I am sorry for those who didn't and were abused by parents who tried to drive that message home in brutal ways or maybe didn't even try.

We do it because we do love them. We don't take the easy way out because it hurts us to the core.   We know that, in the long run, we are doing them a big favor. In the end it is worth it.  If your kids do still go astray....at least you know you did what was best for them no matter how much it hurt you.   You don't carry that guilt around for the rest of your life. And you know what.....in time you're kids realize that too and come back and say "thanks mom and dad....I see now what I couldn't see then".

Re: Could You Turn Your Child In

Depends on whether we're talking about stealing a candy bar .... or a very serious crime.

I would like to think that if I knew about something serious, I'd give him the option to turn himself in with an attorney .... or I'd call the police.

Fortunately, this was never an issue.

Re: Could You Turn Your Child In

I have actually discussed this with my children. They know 100% that I WILL turn them in. I have raised them better than that and if they make poor decisions they know they will deal with the consequences.
