Whenever back-ups or background maintenance was going on, my work computers were slow as molasses. Invariably, if we called IT and asked what they were doing and how long it would last, every employer I've had, IT would deny that anything out of the ordinary was occurring and acted like they didn't know what I could possibly mean (hand to brow), but whenever what they were "not doing" was finished, things would speed back up.

No, you're definitely not. Used to crack me up. If they'd just said yeah, doin' backup, be done in an hour or so, I would have been fine with knowing that. But nooooo - big sekrit!
