The mistake that the principal made was not trying to keep this quiet. I am a teacher and have been through many intruder drills. This is a technique taught in ALICE training. There is only one door in a classroom. Would you rather have students huddle in a corner and get slaughtered when someone comes in the door or would you rather have them surprise the intruder by throwing rocks and running screaming out the door. The gunman may get a shot or two off but this gives the best chance of survival to a trapped classroom of children. I have also heard of schools in which students each have a can of soup in their desks for the same reason.

It is just a matter of time before the students get into a fight with each other and throw the rocks. Someone is going to get hurt, needlessly.

We don't know who told. It's pretty hard to muzzel an entire school..

@Kmac444 What is ALICE training?

Please don't tell me that any rational thinking person actually thinks that if you were facing an armed shooter, that you would have the where-with-all to pick up a ROCK and throw it at him, hoping it would even hit him, much less save your life against a gun??
That's the most ludicrous thing I've ever heard.
And yeah, I had a gun shoved in my face once......picking up a rock and throwing it was the LAST thing I thought about.

You use what you have. After 911 a pilot carried a hatchet on the plane ,and told the passengers to protect themselves with pillows and use whatever they had as a weapon

@cherry I am glad too. I wouldn’t want a job like that today. I am in a school a few times a week and my niece is a teacher and my sister a special ed teacher. Both have been hit and threatened by their students and they break up fights between the students often.
One girl in my sister’s class asked another girl to show her her arm. When she did, she cut her arm with a razor from the elbow almost to the wrist. The classroom was on lock down, but they never found the razor and everything was searched.
Unless you have been in a school lately, you would be surprised. Almost every day there is a fight somewhere among students...not a mouth battle, but a knock down fight. They are sometimes violent and bloody.
I pick my granddaughter up from school everyday. She often will tell me about a bloody fight, the police and ambulance that was there. Her school is not in a bad part of town and the kids are usually well behaved.
Some schools have thousands of students in the building and being human with a lot of hormones flaring up, this is bound to happen.
It is just a matter of time before those rocks get thrown during a fight.
I can almost guarantee it.
Our our country is high on emotions right now. We need to calm down and think this out better. Our kids safety is important.

@chrystaltreewrote:I expected that craziness to be followed by....April Fools !!! I never heard of anything stupider or dumber than that idea. Unless, of course, the rocks have super powers that give them the power to defeat bullets.
Not to mention the kids will be using them on each other - or the teacher!
