My favorite store will be filing for bankruptcy, I'm so sad about this. I discovered this company in 1984 when I first started coming to Cape Cod. ![]()

MIDDLEBORO - Christmas Tree Shops, the well-known New England home decor retailer, is reportedly getting ready to file for bankruptcy.
The Wall Street Journal, citing "people familiar with the matter," reports that the Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing could happen as soon as this weekend. The newspaper said the company has hired law firm Murphy & King in Boston.
Christmas Tree Shops were owned by recently bankrupt Bed Bath & Beyond until 2020. The chain got its start on Cape Cod 50 years ago.
Last year it was reported that the company would be rebranded as "CTS" because people outside of New England believed they only sold Christmas trees. The CEO said at the time there were plans to open another 15 stores with the new CTS name.
There are 15 Christmas Tree Shops currently in Massachusetts and four in New Hampshire, according to the store's website.

It's depressing isn't it? First it was K mart then Sears, Pier1, Stein Mart, Bed Bath & Beyond, Tuesday Morning. I'm afraid World Market isn't far behind. It's like a domino effect. I am a person who prefers to shop in person. Ordering off a computer especially at Christmas is not fun for me.

OH NOOO!!!! 😔 I love CTS! There are two of the stores within 15 minutes in my area. Such a fun store to shop at, and where I stock up on K-cups. I'm sad now. 😔

When I was much younger, I enjoyed shopping there. It was a great place to find cute, affordable things like curtains, bedding, party supplies, holiday decor, etc.
But there came a turning point, and it much of it became made in China junk.

In my area (Northern VA) the Christmas Tree Stores go by the name "And That".
There was an "And That" down near my parent's but that one recently closed, when I asked at my store if they were going to be closing the clerk said No, the other one closed because the landlord tried to raise their rent (was going up triple what they had previously paid); as of yet no one has gone into that space. She also said the landlord gave them less than 30 days to decide.

I do have to say that the Christmas Tree Shop's building at the foot of the Sagamore Bridge is truly a landmark that's been there for as long as I can remember.

Christmas Tree Shops are still crowded in my area. There should be a way to return them to independent (of BB&B) status.
