I did my Census form online so they could easily get my email address.  I'm guessing they asked for email and phone number on the form and people (including me) have forgotten.

@ThinkingOutLoud    This could very well have something to do with the allocation of supplies and equipment like vaccine and test kits in your community.  Why wouldn't you trust the US Census Bureau?

The reason for the census is to allocate reps for Congress - not medical supplies. As to your question - I'll leave that alone so the thread isn't poofed.

They do much more than just count the population every 10 years.

Just because they do it doesn't change the fact that wasn't their intended purpose.

@ThinkingOutLoud    They also removed the hitching posts and watering troughs from outside of the Capitol Building.  Times change.

Yes and now gvt agencies are used to target certain people/groups. But by all means, feel free to give the gvt whatever info they ask for.

I mailed mine in. Never gave them my email address or my phone number anywhere on that form as far as I can remember.

Doing a search online for someone's phone number/email address doesn't sound very official to me.

ETA - I specifically mailed mine in just to avoid an electronic trail...my email address.

  1. @SilleeMee   I don't know how they get their info...I was just saying all that info is out there...I was surprised I found cell numbers ... there were email addresses listed but the one for me was one I had in the beginning with a dial up number and provider...now that seems like centuries ago.   DW

The 2020 form had a phone number request.  It may have been optional,  but I'm sure they received many responses with numbers provided.

@ThinkingOutLoud

You are mistaken, it was part of the purpose.

First you don’t Trust them

Then it wasn’t the intended purpose

Now it’s because they target certain people, groups.

Who are those certain people and groups ?

The Navajo Nation lost millions in funding for infrastructure improvements because they couldn't  get their members to complete the Census forms.   Their president was on TV constantly pleading with them.  They government won't allocate funds to an isolated area without assurances that there are enough people to justify the expense.

@Kachina624

I remember there were also issues raised about mailing addresses.

Any excuse, to keep people out, I guess.

The precusor to the current Census  Bureau was created as an office within the Department of the Interior on March 6, 1902 under President Theodore Roosevelt.  It was later moved to the Department of Commerce.

Previously,  the count was done under the jurisdiction of U.S. Marshalls.

The 1902 legislation is only 15 pages, but clearly defines the role of the office to be much broader than the decennial count.  It authorizes the Office to collect and analyze a wide variety of statistics including age, income, profession, marital status and so on.

Therefore,  the function of what is now the Census Bureau has always been to collect a broad array of statistical information.
