I believe they contact you by US mail only. They don't call you, text you or send you emails.

Re: Census Bureau request

[ Edited ]

That's not correct;  this is from the US Census Bureau

Some surveys send invitations via text message or email. You can verify an email or text message is from the Census Bureau by noting the email address or phone number from which the invitation was sent.

Several surveys, such as the American Time Use Survey, are conducted by phone. The Census Bureau uses publicly available telephone directories to call survey participants. Because we are contacting you on official government business, the Census Bureau is not subject to the “Do Not Call” list restrictions.

The Navajo Nation lost millions in funding for infrastructure improvements because they couldn't  get their members to complete the Census forms.   Their president was on TV constantly pleading with them.  They government won't allocate funds to an isolated area without assurances that there are enough people to justify the expense.

Household Surveys are also conducted between the official Census count.

The information collected is used by dozens of federal agencies.

The Census Bureau does much, much more than the dicennial count for Congressional reapportionment.

If you don't want to participate in a Household Survey, don't.

Which is why I ignore their extra surveys/questions.

@ThinkingOutLoud    This could very well have something to do with the allocation of supplies and equipment like vaccine and test kits in your community.  Why wouldn't you trust the US Census Bureau?

The reason for the census is to allocate reps for Congress - not medical supplies. As to your question - I'll leave that alone so the thread isn't poofed.

They do much more than just count the population every 10 years.

Just because they do it doesn't change the fact that wasn't their intended purpose.

The part that I'm wondering about is how they are getting peoples' email addresses and cell ph#s.  Do people put that sort of info on their census replies?

I can't even imagine doing that (nothing to do with them, but just in general I don't give out that info universally), although I do answer all the questions (on the actual census) that I feel are pertinent to the cause.

@ThinkingOutLoud    They also removed the hitching posts and watering troughs from outside of the Capitol Building.  Times change.
