I admit I never thought much of Paul Newman in his youth but, as he matured, he became much more interesting.

A more impressive actor, a more impressive person.  And so much better looking!

He aged well.  And he and Joanne were formidable.

Re: Celebrities “In Person”

@KittySoftPaws,

When I worked at Saks 5th Avenue in Greenwich, CT, Regis and his wife would come in alot, mostly Sunday afternoons.  The store was small and open so you could hear just about everyone no matter where you were on the main floor.  I worked in Jewelry.  Regis would literally do standup in Cosmetics and have everyone in stitches.  His wife - blah - just wanted free cosmetic samples.

I had one unpleasant, and only, encounter with her.  She was in the Chanel department and I was in Jewelry, right across.  I saw that neither the Chanel reps were on the floor.  So I go over to "Joy-less" and ask if she would like me to get Nancy (the salesperson) for her.  She turns her head away from me and very rudely yells "They know I'm here!"  And I thought to myself, honey, you can fall to the floor and I'll walk right over you.  Ugh.  Everytime I saw her in the store, I would walk the other way.

Gayle King used to come in all the time.  She was so nice!  We would just call her Gayle, never Ms. King.Woman Tongue

Glenn Close came in with her puppy and daughter.  She had no makeup.  She was so fair, absolutely no color on her face.

NY Yankee pitcher David Cone came in on Christmas Eve.  This was after he retired.  I think that was the only time I actually lost it.  I started babbling about him pitching the perfect game (like he didn't know!) and my nephews still had the newspaper article hanging in their rooms, yada yada yada.  I'm surprised I didn't get fired.

Before I worked at the Greenwich store, I worked part time at the White Plains Saks, again in Jewelry.  We had a fine jewelry sale every August that was always very popular.  I took a day off from my "real" job to help with the sale.  In walks two women, one older, the other her daughter.  The daughter looked like a model, dressed in all pink (pantyhose & shoes too).  They both end up buying something.  The daughter was Carolyn Bessette Kennedy, JFK Jr's wife.  The poor thing went to the ladies' room, which was in the Better Sportswear Dept, and all of us sales staff in the area were "milling" around fixing hangers until she came out.
