Oh, @Cats3000...management won't care about the size of the tip. In fact, they might wonder what the server did to warrant the low tip. Also, the low tip hurts that server who depends on the tips since management only pays them $2-4 per hour.
BTW, we always use cash at restaurants. Our CC is for hotels, airfare, online, etc. We use a pay though the phone at gas pumps.

@MamaWick wrote:@Tinkrbl44 yes, I know. That has always been around since the advent of Mastercard and is the cost of doing business. It's just in the last several years that charge has become visible to the consumer. That's what I object to. They should raise prices slightly behind the scene and don't be "in your face" about it.
So are you saying that businesses should raise their prices across the board for all customers so that customers that use credit cards won't have to pay a slightly higher fee?

@Cats3000 reducing the tip isn't going to get the attention of management. You've forced the server to "eat" the charge, not management. It's not the servers fault.

Punishing a server for an owner/managerial decision is very unfair (in my view.)

We are starting to pay with cash more often, I hate that we can be tracked with our debit card spending and we have had that card compromised a few times.

I am also using cash more frequently. Have never had a debit card or used an ATM. I only pay with cash at restaurants.

All of the restaurants I've eaten in lately (down the shore) added a fee for credit card use. Some are doing it here at home too (Philly).

@Rockycoast Agreed. My daughter was a server for many years as well as a bartender. She depended on tips for her income.
Unless I get a really awful server (which is rare) I tip very generously.

@Cats3000 - As others have stated, the only one affected by this is the server. Management will either think he did a poor job or you were too cheap to tip him. Not very nice to the server.
