I have noticed this in some restaurants here but I hardly eat out. I use cash after being charged one time. Heck with that I will cook at home and pay myself. Better food at home and no overeating either.
I am cheap when it comes to certain things more than I use to. My husband always carries cash and I never do but doing cash more often. For me having cash and using that I spend less. Too easy to swipe a card.

Had a first experience with it. I reduced the "before-tax" total I use to calculate the tip, by the amount of the charge. Then substantially reduced the tip to get the attention of the management. And will not go back to the restaurant. Forced them to "eat" the charge.

@Twins Mom I still use my debit (mostly)/cc. It's easier to track spending. Also, if you open your wallet everyone around you sees you have cash. They see how much you are carrying. If you get robbed and your card gets stolen you can usually recover that money. They steal your cash you are not getting that back. Your wallet gets stolen that money is not going to get refunded to your account. I throughly understand the online risks, and that businesses charge more for use of my debit card. Going to ATMs is very risky now even if you're in your car. You are opening the vault to your money when you are there with the "key" in your hand. I do take advantage of the cash back option when I have purchased something so I do have a small amount of $$ with me to purchase my coffee etc. I guess I'll have to take out more and have it "ready" should we decide to stop to eat.

It has always cost businesses more to accept credit cards, since they pay a fee to the card companies for using the service.
When cards first started to become popular, it was common practice for businesses to charge a fee to use them. They normally would have a sign at the register what the extra fee was. Years later many businesses dropped the extra fee after customers started using cards more and would frequent businesses that didn't charge the fee.
With expenses for everything getting higher, apparently businesses are trying to recoup any way they can.

When ever possible we pay cash. For everything. Once waiting for Hubbs at a grocery store I was amazed at NO CASH- almost all used a debit.

I eat out very rarely, so maybe that's why I haven't seen the charge personally yet, but on the financial news I follow, I have seen that we can expect companies to reduce or eliminate totally some of the business practices they were using to attract customers.
If any restaurant were to add a card charge, I'd pay cash unless there were some discount other than points I'd also miss. Just points are virtually always worth less than that upcharge on the bill.

I always have cash with me and use it wherever I can. I eat lunch out pretty frequently, like really frequently, and usually I'm alone and I pay cash.
Cash is no big deal for me. Every so often, I cash a check (yes, a check) at the bank, put the cash in a drawer at home and add cash to my wallet as needed. When my stash is gone, I cash another check.
I haven't used my debit card in years. And I never use an ATM. Haven't in years. That's just my preference.

Credit card usually. Never a check. Don't trust the check exchange.

@Tinkrbl44 yes, I know. That has always been around since the advent of Mastercard and is the cost of doing business. It's just in the last several years that charge has become visible to the consumer. That's what I object to. They should raise prices slightly behind the scene and don't be "in your face" about it.
