NO company announces layoffs in advance?
Are you SURE?
Facebook (META) in the last two days, announced ANOTHER tranch of 10,000 people TO BE LAID OFF.
On top of the 10K already let go in the FIRST announced layoff in fall 2022.
Bet it's a surprise to them ( advance notice).

After reading all the replies to my post regarding severance pay, discussions about severance pay, no tears shed, etc., I just wanted to go back to my original thought on my original post. There are people in nursing homes, independent living, widows, widowers, people who live alone and they are older obviously. QVC is on in a lot of assisted living, nursing homes, indepent living apartments to get away from all the terrible news of the day, the bickering and bipartisanship that is so much a part of the US right now. I know I even turn to QVC in the background when I get sick of the news of the world and I am not in the age group I am discussing above. A lot of the these people are homebound and alone. They watch QVC and some of the hosts DO feel like friends to them and it gives them a sense of security. No one should make fun of these elderly people. I remember watching David Venable at the end of his kitchen show right before Christmas and he looked in the camera and said "for all of you who are alone, we are here for you and we love you," something to that effect. There is nothing wrong with homebound, elderly, widows, widowers, etc. getting attached to some of the QVC hosts. So please think about them. And whether they get severance packages or not, getting laid off or fired (whichever term you prefer), is always a depressing experience. I believe Carolyn and Dan, being employed and on air with QVC for all their respective years, brought about some sadness and some stress in their lives. Please remember this.

Your post illustrates the sad irony that QVC is up against today....
They are a shopping channel.
Shopping. As in BUYING.
NOT a mild, bland, pacifying program, playing benignly in the background for hours a day... to those who live in nursing homes, assisted living, etc....where they may WATCH by the hour and be mesmerized about personalized stories of the host's alleged gardening or cooking or "caring" about the viewers....
They do NOT buy.
They do not BUY.
And that's the ONLY thing that will save this company.
I don't see anyone "making fun" of people who WATCH QVC for solace or percieved "friendship".
It's just not a realistic business model that QVC can sustain..people who watch for hours... but no matter what, no matter how much is spent on sets, hosts, inventory...they watch but do NOT BUY.
They USED to buy, when QVC was in a different era of online sales, but today, with all the competition, it's probably not sustainable at this point.
I'm a 30 year watcher and buyer, but the presentations have gotten SO infantile and moronic now it's a complete turn off.
I wonder: WHO is thier new target audience? Us the older viewer?
Or do they think the infantile moronic behavior represents the NEW customer they are trying to attract?
If that's the case, I'd be insulted as a new viewer, and go to Amazon instead.
Last night I tuned into some garden show with THREE hosts, one of them David V, who stood kind of off to the side looking like "What am I doing here.....?"
He looked like his back hurt. Meanwhile the other two were in a jabberthon of ecstatic bliss over some overpriced solar lights.
Sheeesh.
It's gonna end folks, sooner not later.
I bet David and the other long timers, holding on by thier fingernails, are praying for one more month at this point, and please let there be something left for my pension when it DOES end.

This is a rather insulting post. Actually many of them do buy. They are not in prison. While their bodies may not work as well due to various causes, plenty have their wits intact.

slmsia,
Thanks for posting your lovely words. Your compassion is evident. ![]()
I have to agree with you. I often tuned in when I needed an positive break from news or just wanted to shop, relax, and enjoy a show they surrounded a theme I liked.
I have been amazed at how unkind so many of the posts have been on here regarding Dan & Carolyn's departure....or more so, towards the people that may be missing seeing them in their day --- or were affected by the surprise they were gone from QVC.
I also agree that any layoff or departure from a job can be extremely traumatic and depressing. It can also be difficult if you are a shy or humble person, and your situation is sort of public.
It is true that people's TV is often their connection to the world and some human experience. I am not sure how we have lost our way so much that we have forgotten that people need connection. In whatever form someone finds it, even waiting for the mailman each day....if it matters to you -- it matters to you. It is okay to get attached to things!
I work full time, have a really busy life, and I am in my 40s. So, how Carolyn and Dan were enjoyed here at the Q spanned many people.
take care![]()
