One can "know how to dress", without there being a formal dress code.

I would be thrilled with a host who sent out invites, and there was no dress code specified.

It takes the pressure off of having to dress a certain way.

Even jeans can be dressed up.

For example, take black jeans, put on a nice top or sweater, and boots.

Ta-da! A nice outfit.

Um .... okay .....  I guess you could call this a "nice" jeans outfit ....    but this is hardly what could be called party attire or a holiday outfit.   It's just plain old jeans and a sweater.

Re: CHRISTMAS PARTY ATTIRE - POLL

LOL!

As could easily have been predicted, the thread has become "I know how to dress, you obviously don't" and "What a slob you are. Glad I'm not like YOU!"

Carry on. I'm sure the OP got whatever might be of value in the thread awhile back.

@Moonchilde LOL!  I took it more as the "I'm a human being who is capable of making common sense choices and navigating through an adult world" versus the "If I can't wear my orange sweatpants to your housewarming/cocktail party, I'm not going" type thread.

@RazorSharp, I think it depends on whose posts stand out to (the general) you. Hard to miss the "in your face", clearly passing judgment posts.

when people are dressed inappropriately and it is recognized by other humans, that's not judgment.  It's that the people aren't dressed for the event.  It isn't damning them to hellfire or calling the police, it is simply stating the obvious.  Nothing "in your face" about discussing what to wear to a party.  Just opinions.  Why do people get so upset over others having differing opinions about what is appropriate and what isn't?

You can't discuss anything without putting someone's nose out of joint these days.

It's not All About You, your posts aren't the only ones here (or the only ones that matter). Some people are able to see the whole picture, some aren't.

'Nose out of joint'? I simply made a comment. But yes, I *now* see there does appear to be one - and it isn't mine :-)

@Moonchilde

I would never presume to think I'm a parenting expert .... but, when I was a kid, mothers taught their daughters how to dress.   Some things were acceptable, and some things just weren't.  It was one of the life skills parents taught their children.

I also seem to recall that there could sometimes be too much emphasis on how a "proper young lady" would dress, but shouldn't all adults have the knowledge ..... and common sense .... to know that not "everything goes" for any social event?

Re: CHRISTMAS PARTY ATTIRE - POLL

Hi all!  I'm the OP!  Thanks for all the suggestions.  Please, no one should be offended.  I have decided on a "festive casual" attire for our party.  Everyone invited is a close friend or family (we've invited about 65 people)!  Should be fun!  Have a blessed holiday everyone! Smiley Very Happy

Yes, and not saying there's anything wrong with that. Just SMH at the wild, hyperbolic, accusatory assumptions. One is either "all in" with their fashion sense/knowledge, or apparently "totally out" with no in between or accounting for taste, to read some posters.

Also - whether we like it or not, what's "appropriate" changes over the years and through generations, so what is appropriate/inappropriate to one group isn't to another and that has more to do with age and the way some things are viewed today than it has to do what we were taught. The way I was taught to dress 50 years ago is no longer completely valid, no matter how much I might want to hang on to it (though I personally don't).

Fashion and "proper" shift with the decades, always have and always will. My "proper" is MINE; it may not be someone else's, and I don't feel any compunction to force everyone to see it my way as the only "correct" view.

I'm quite sure that 90% of people understand the difference between appropriate and inappropriate - but it's THEIR appropriate/inappropriate. No one, here or elswhere, can be the arbiter of others' choices. Yet people believe they are, and that their definition/opinion is THE only true one. I'm just having a laugh at that.

People are presumably comfortable with their decisions. Not *wishing* to dress a certain way is not the same as not knowing how to dress or being lazy, it's simply not wishing to, no more, nor less. Not wishing to put on cocktail attire for a house party, for example, does not, as some have exclaimed, automatically mean that person is a lazy slob who is incapable of knowing K-Mart from Linea. It's just been amusing to watch this unfold. Not surprising, just amusing.
