Re: Bragging Rights: Highest Mileage on an Odometer

I am the opposite....I have a four year old car that just broke 12k miles on it.

I am the little old lady who only drives to church on sunday--except I am not old and I don't go to church.

(we drive my husband's car for most things, I just go around town in mine)

Re: Bragging Rights: Highest Mileage on an Odometer

Over 300,000 and the odometer didn't work for at least a couple of years after that ....Honda Civic. Found out later that the odometer not working was because of more damage in the car that wasn't showing up till it was gone. I did have pictures at one time and when I bought a new car, not a Honda, everyone thought I was nuts. Well, I am.

Re: Bragging Rights: Highest Mileage on an Odometer

I bought a red 1991 Mitsubishi 3000GT in May of that year when they first hit the market. I still have it, with 170,000 miles on the odometer. I've loved this car for 23 years -- my son has told me for years to sell it, but I just can't! If any of you are old enough to remember the song "The Little Old Lady from Pasadena" by Jan and Dean, about the little old lady driving around in her red sports car, I guess that's me-except not in Pasadena!{#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

Re: Bragging Rights: Highest Mileage on an Odometer

Let's see:

2001 Ford Escape: has about 194,000 miles on it. Bought it almost 4 years ago. Had 184K on it then . . . bought it for 3K . . . the kids HS car, coincidentally even in their school colors red with black trim, daughter drove it first 2 years, sat 1 year (well I drove it every so often to grocery store to keep battery charged, son driving this year and hopefully next year. 2 Miles per day to school. 1 there and 1 back. Once in awhile maybe little further, daughter did drive it to dance 20 miles away twice a week. Very reliable. Low cost. And fairly decent on insurance . . . 50.00 a month for teenagers. Maybe 400.00 in repairs in 4 years.

1997 Mercury Marquis: 175,000 miles My Father gave it to husband 7 years ago. He drives it to and from work. Very reliable. Maybe 300.00 in repairs in 7 years.

1990 Chevy 1500 Pickup: I bought new with 4 miles on it. Has maybe 165,000 on it. Odometer quit working for a few years and then started working again. It is only driven maybe once or twice a year . . . to go get a few loads of mulch and maybe fill up gas containers for lawn mower. Maybe 500.00 in repairs last 20 years.

2007 Ford Expedition. My car. Bought new with 7 miles on it. 52,000 miles, was only 30 something thousand until daughter went away to college a year and half ago. Those 500 round trip miles sure do add up. 2,000.00 in repairs. ABS Brake System component went out at the 36,000 mile mark . . . out of warranty. Dang it.

Finally got rid of 1998 Expedition last Spring . . . bought new . . had 172,000 on it.

We've had very good luck, knock knock on wood, with our Ford's, Chevy's and Mercury's although we did buy daughter a Honda CRV back in August. Bought it new. Surprisingly her insurance on brand new vehicle was only 55.00 a month. Go figure vs. a 2001 for 45.00 a month. Still all the high school kids with their fairly new Dodge Chargers, Chevy Camaro's, Ford Mustangs . . . nope . . . not my poor deprived children. Smiley Happy

Before I met and married my husband, I always would get close to 100K and then outta there . . . time for new car.

He is an engineer . . . he likes having paid for cars . . . even IF they are OLD . . . as long as they get us from Point A to Point B and back to Point A again, he is good with that.

We do always keep one car as our "trip car". The rest of them don't get driven out of our county.

While yeah sure I'd like to drive a new or newer car every other year or so and maybe even buy another little something for me to drive around town that isn't so hard to park as my big Expedition . .. as I park in the South 40 in most lots and hike in . . . but I guess after 20 years . . . he has rubbed off on me now . . . as it isn't like we can't afford newer cars . . . and I'd rather have the "money in the bank" instead of in the driveway. Smiley Happy

Reminded me of my mom. She had a big old car, I think it was about 1980 Chevy Impala. I would fill up her gas tank twice a year when I visited her--June and December. A tank lasted 6 months! She only went to church 3 blocks away, the local grocery store and drug store, and a big 2 mile trip to Walmart. I would also take it to a full service station for them to check the oil, fluids, etc.

Re: Bragging Rights: Highest Mileage on an Odometer

Reading this shows that many of us are keeping our cars for quite awhile. I rememebr my folks used to trade in their cars every 2 years when I was young.

Handed my 1989 Mazda 626 to my son when it had close to 100,000 on it. He added at least that much commuting back and forth to college before we finally gave it up in 2002. The odometer had turned over to zero at least twice and then finally just stopped. It still ran well and looked awesome.

I imagine someone is still driving that car. Loved it, but it got to the point where it needed a $2 part and we weren't car savvy enough to change ourselves. Labor charges for service would have killed us. Hopefully, a handy tinkering teenager got it.

Not sure the mileage on the car I replaced it with in 2002 (another Mazda {#emotions_dlg.thumbup}). My other son is still driving that one and I'd put a lot on it before I gave it to him last January and he commutes over 40 miles a day.
