@beckyb1012 . I'm 64 and  have honeslty never beeen to a wedding reception with only cake and punch.  I can't imagine having guests travel for hours and not give them anything to eat.

I wouldn't have people traveling for hours and a big deal of a wedding.  I'd have a small wedding for people near in distance, not tons of showers and gifts and parties before during and after.  I'd get married in a church in a simple ceremony, have dessert and be done with it.  To me, that's a wedding about a marriage.  That's my take on it.

But I don't come from a background of a lot of money, so I'm talking about how poor to average people used to get married.  Like something that doesn't cost more than your car. . . or half the cost of your car.

I guess the most cost effective way would be to just elope and be done with it.

Buffet style with free beer and soda would be fine by me. I know some weddings are lavish affairs, but I grew up in simpler times and would prefer that the couple saved a few bucks at the reception.  Just make sure there's a polka band.

Now that's an old-fashioned Wisconsin wedding!

I have no intention of giving in to them. Unfortunately, I cannot stop them from bringing in a flask or a bottle. Although, I could get real clumsy and knock it over.

wink wink

Maybe it’s because we’re older, I think most of our friends are beer and wine drinkers. I told my fiancée, we can’t have a buffet and endless shots because our backs will hurt from all that standing around and our livers don’t recover like they used to.

Just attended niece's wedding.  Seated meals (2 food selections - beef and a pasta option for vegetarians and if someone had issues they were instructed to contact the venue beforehand).  They had open bar and lemonade, ice tea, soda or water for non-drinkers.

If they were to offer limited choices on the bar that's their perogative and I'd not take issue with it - I've been to weddings in the past where there was no booze at all.  Their day their show,

As long as every guest has a plate of food and refreshments and made to feel welcome, it’s good! Personally, I do not see any obligation to ply people with alcohol or provide lavish meals. If the wedding had just cake and punch, it’s fine by me too. I’d rather see a couple off to a good financial start and keep their folks out of debt too.

I doubt this is a very popular viewpoint with all the pressure to make weddings spectacular, but weddings can easily get stressful for parents and the couple. I have seen fights, medical issues, and ruined finances and read about all the complaints here of pushy guests, out of control demands, and unhappy parents. That’s not what this should be.

I am happy either way.  With a buffet you get to choose what you like and will eat.  I don't drink so the bar is a non-issue for me. If you DO drink I would think a beer, wine, or signature drink would be satisfy everyone.  If not, drink water or pay for a drink of your choice that isn't offered.

My Granddaughter is getting married in September. Outside wedding on the ocean. Inside for cocktail hour, sit down dinner with choices. Oh I am getting excited!

I prefer a buffet.  I had a friend who got married at a restaurant that had very famous Sunday brunches but was closed during the day on Saturday.  They got married on the patio of the restaurant and had a buffet Saturday brunch for the reception.  Best wedding food ever!
