I think the article is using the wrong word, and not even sure why there was an article. Ive noticed anytime I am in a densely populated area, people go about their business almost like walking zombies. I've never noticed the few times in NY people being rude, but I have to say the last time I was there I actually realized I was becoming just like them, especially riding the subway. Head up, looking straight ahead, and walking with purpose! Oh, and I mostly wore black clothing too. Lol!

Possibly, although I've never visited. I just read the response of New Yorkers asked the quesiton, they were less than kind. Apparently they are annoyed at the slow moving tourists? And their language was vulger when asked to respond. I don't have any wish to visit New York City, possibly the state of New York might be a better fit for me. I've visited many states, and find that the friendlest people are in the midwest and the south. Just my opinion.

IMO that survey was a load of doo doo. People are people no matter where you go. All the cities listes are congested, high populated cities. The odds of finding a rude person are higher. Los angeles and new yorkers don't seem to judge, but they can spend hours in traffic daily. I know Angelinos are always in traffic. I think LA traffic is way worse than anything you find in other populated cities. Living is expensive, and people tend move further and further from work to afford living! We live in Bay area. I know when my husband was working he spent 3.5 hrs in traffic everyday. He took an express bus, and we lived only 37 miles from work. We have to plan everything around traffic.
while we are on the subject there are a few places I have found where the people are happy to see you. Sort of zenlike. That is capitola, santa cruz and scotland.
