I asked the Credit Union what the best way was to close credit card accounts. She said don't do it. I found out the credit cards had already been closed since we were not using them. I didn't notice a change in our fico score.

Agree.  Chase notified me it was closing my credit card because I hadn't used it in 2 years.  No problem.

I must be the only person in the USofA that does not give a rats axx about a credit score.  It has NEVER stopped me from purchasing and/or getting anything I wanted.

I am a cash & carry queen.  It's rare that I use my cc.  I pay all my bills by check.  I keep "house money"  in a secret place in my apartment.

Re: Anyway to avoid a ding on your credit score?

Honestly, if you're concerned about any effect on your credit score, you wouldn't go for another card with 'a decent interest rate', you would/should never carry a balance.  That has an effect on your score.

I have no idea what the interest rates are on our cards, and I'm sure they're sky high.  But I'll never pay a penny over what I owe each month-- to interest rates.

We use credit for everything and amass great perks/rewards/cashback.  I remember hearing years ago that cards that offer rewards as such, don't typically have good interest rates.  Almost an oxymoron!

I'm another that never pays attention to credit scores, my DH is an accountant so that's his domain. He is gungho for those zero interest programs, which is how we just got the master bath overhauled. Our credit score is high, but I really don't pay attention to it.

@cindyNC - Are safety concerns the reason you won’t use credit cards in restaurants or is it due to some now adding a surcharge? My DH and I eat out about once a week but during a recent visit to New Jersey, 3 of the restaurants we ate in added a fee when paying with a credit card. I have never seen that in my area.

Re: Anyway to avoid a ding on your credit score?

Thanks everyone! Learned alot....

When I inquired at the Bank we use, the lady said it is good to use your cards and to carry a little balance every so often. Paying on time is the biggie though, which we always do.

I know your credit rating makes a difference in areas like Insurance. You get better rates with better credit. The Insurance Companies feel that you are more responsible if you pay your bills on time I guess.

We each have a main card  ( Discover and Citi (previously A T and T ) we use for most things and a busines card for the farm - also have a couple of cards that we don't really use but have been advised not to close.  Every couple of years we will get a letter from the cardholders of these accounts telling us to use the card at least once in the next six months (or something like that) to avoid it being closed.

So, we do and they stay active that way. It supposedly is good to have that much credit available at your disposal but not need to utilize it.

How RUDE.  I hope you didn't answer such a question.  It's none of her business.  I just don't understand people asking such questions and thinking it's ok.   I would have just smiled and drove off.

I know it doesn't affect the numbers much but I'm really proud of how we've managed our finances for 45 years and the score that reflects it.  Even if it just goes down 2 pts, I'm not happy about it.  I just checked it, it's 825 but that was two days before we bought the mattress.

It's both but I don't know which one has the biggest hit on your score.
