Re: Anyone Spending Thanksgiving Alone?

After spending literally most of my life trying to please everyone, I am baking today, cooking tomorrow and watching the Macy's parade on Thursday.    I don't put any pressure on my kids on when they should show up, they usually give me a call about 30 minutes before they arrive and I start to pull everything out of the refrigerator.   Holidays & traditions are important but should not overshadow people we love.

I cook lunch for my family every Sunday.   So whatever happens on Thursday, we will eat leftovers on Sunday.

DD marched in the parade in 2006, I went also and we have some great memories.

@AussieLuvr I love your post.

Everyone have a safe & blessed Thanksgiving

Re: Anyone Spending Thanksgiving Alone?

@Katcat1I wish I could say this more eloquently, but you're not alone.  There's us here, I'm sure you're in somebody's thoughts.  I spent many, many holidays by myself.  Sometimes I was lonely and sometimes I wasn't.   For the past 25 years that I've been with my husband and had to go to his relatives, there were several holidays that I would have preferred to be by myself.  I'm fortunate enough even in my single days, I had no qualms about going out by myself, whether to eat or see a movie.   I've had many losses these past few years, I miss my sisters terribly but  I look at holidays as just another day to get through.  I already have our dinner made for Thursday but we're going to a casino--yes I know that's not very holidayish--lose more money than we should, then we'll come home and have a good meal.  But please remember, you're not alone.

Re: Anyone Spending Thanksgiving Alone?

The last couple years, I learned to dread November and December. My SO passed unexpectedly 2 years ago on Thanksgiving weekend, shortly after my mom passed. And my best friend that we spent all holidays with passed last October. My child isn't coming home from college this Thanksgiving. I ordered a turkey breast to be cooked at the deli, I'll make stuffing in a casserole dish, and I'll bake an apple pie as a birthday sweet. I've decided to catch up on a few things from work and to surprise a colleague and finish a project over the weekend that we've been working on together, so she won't have to stress over it. Maybe work is my savior. I love watching the classic holiday movies and I will watch, but I find that I'm overly sentimental about them lately.

I am alone but never lonely on holidays. For Thanksgiving I already made home made soup and homemade cranberry salad.  I have sweet potatoes ready for the oven, pulled chicken from the freezer about an hour ago, and bought fresh green beans today. I love to cook, so today already has started my fun. Smiley Wink

Re: Anyone Spending Thanksgiving Alone?

I will be alone and that's okay. My kids are in other states and can't afford to come home. As long as I get to talk with them I am good to go. It's a pajama day for me with Hallmark movies. I can't eat much on the TG menu anymore since I don't eat dairy and gluten, but that's okay. I bought a roast and some cheesy potatoes from Trader Joes. I might make a pumpkin pie. I think I will check in here since there are others alone too. Happy Thanksgiving all.

@texassunflower.....that first year after a death is tough, especially the holidays.  My mom died on a holiday, that following year I remember being awake all night long...each year gets easier but you neer forget.

I hope that your sister is able to come back to your home eventually.

I also will be alone on Thanksgiving.  Ironically I bought the same Stouffer's dinner for myself.  Have cranberry sauce and sweet potatoes lined up.  My big treat is pumpkin cheesecake I have in the freezer.  I plan on catching up with my DVR. I honestly am glad to be alive to be able to enjoy the day. Every day counts no matter how you spend it.  Enjoy!!

@Katcat1

I was totally out of food for the last week - and this afternoon I went to the small Walmart in Oxnard - near my home. I bought several frozen meals - and then I saw Stouffer's Roast Turkey Breast with russet mashed potatoes. So I bought it - thinking that I'll celebrate the holidays by myself. I also bought 2 fresh yams. That is too amazing!!! For many years, I celebrated Thanksgiving with my friend Brenda - and her family - unfortunately, she died of cancer 3 yrs ago. It's times like this that I wished I had gotten married and had a family.

I actually started celebrating an hour ago. I bought the Coconut Creme Pie at Walmart - and had a slice. The whole pie was $5.00 (on sale).
