@brewhahawrote:

Mix orange oil with water and spray the entry points and perimeters. Orange oil is what exterminators use.

Another way is place oatmeal where you see ants. They will eat it and when they drink water the oats will expand and they will burst to death.

I never have them anywhere but the kitchen.  I keep the counters clean and don't leave food out, but they still come.  I use ant bait, and it works for me.  I'm wondering what I'll do now though, because I have a kitten.  He jumps up on the counters no matter how many times I take him off them and tell him no.  I've tried several things, and he's determined.  I don't like to spray because of my pets.  I have a dog, too.

This year I shouldn't have a problem.  I had to have my house treated for termites, and the termite guys said I wouldn't have ants or spiders this year either because of the treatment.

@Carmiewrote:

I get them every spring.  I hate them.

These work fast and they are effective.  They work by killing the whole colony.  Do not  place them where pets can get to them.

The kitchen ants I get hate dishwashing liquid. They are usually around the kitchen sink, so I I leave a trail of liquid along where they are and they go away pretty quickly. I have used Dawn and Ivory Soap. Both worked. Probably any brand would do.

My kitchen sink doesn’t look good with ribbons of blue goo

all around it, but it gets the job done.

A long time ago I read that ants do not like bay leaves.  I spread the dried ones around in my cabinets and pantry.  They don't like the scent they give off.  I hate using chemicals.

The most effective product to get rid of ants: liquid Terro ant baits.  The container is an oblong plastic see-through trap.  Do not tilt the container once you snip it off the other containers because the clear liquid will run out.

Easy to recognize it on the shelf:  bright orange label.

I have even used them outside on my deck...works wonders !

Boric acid. We had a ton of them around the outside of the house perimeter

Put out trays /little bowls full of boric acid and they track it back to the nest and it kills the Queen, they disappeared fast for us.

We order it from a chemical place online in 10lb bags. You can buy just a little dab at stores, but, we needed a bunch to put in cracks of the pavement around the foundation of whole house. Thank God we killed them

before they invaded the inside of house.

@Meowingkittywrote:

Grits. Put some grits down where they are and they take it back to the nest. Supposedly when they eat it they blow up and explode and die. I heard this doesn’t work on fire ants but it’s worked for us with just regular ants. Also you could try 1 part Borax to 3 parts cheap syrup or sugar
If using sugar, add enough water to make a syrup like consistency
For instance, I could make up a small batch with 1 teaspoon Borax, 3 teaspoons sugar, and enough water to make it like syrup. Or I could make up a large batch with 1/3 cup borax and 1 cup corn syrup and keep it in a sealed jar to use as needed. Place the ant bait on a flat or shallow surface, such as a piece of cardboard, a used canning lid or a lid from sour cream container. You want to make it easy for the ants to get access.

This is what we use, too.  We put the concoction in smaller lids, tho, such as juice bottle lids.  Our ant problem started about 6 years ago, don't know what is going on because I don't remember having such a problem before then.  They creep me out and just thinking about them makes my scalp itch!

We've used the small Terro plastic enclosed ant bait traps that you can get at home improvement stores.

We have a cat and we have put the traps where she can't get to them.

We would get ants around our bottom kitchen cabinets and floor molding.

Luckily we haven't had this problem for a few years, but the traps took care of the problem immediately. They were gone rather quickly, and didn't come back.

They aren't here yet but I can just see them planning their itinerary. I fear I will be first on their list.
