May be someone can clarify what 'immediate' is in terms of aviation. Either way, why no transmittal from the transponders?

Ugh. The reasons transponders don't transmit................well, not good.

Agreed, my mind won't let me go 'there' again.

the beginning of this thread shows how fast and furious information was going out. the air asia statement came soon after we became aware of the plane missing from radar.

That has no bearing imho, they knew there was some kind of issue within a relatively short period of time.
air asia was on it immediately after they lost contact with the plane. they issued a statement soon after communication wasn't picked up again. air asia has been up front with this situation from the start in my opinion.
I agree completely, eve. Unfortunately, they're coming under immediate criticism and skepticism... probably as a result of the Malaysia Airlines bungling.
i'm very impressed with air asia's response to this. they waited just long enough as to not let family and friends panic until they confirmed radar was lost. once they established that communication was lost they immediately issued a press release.

It's upsetting that the planes still haven't adopted the system that tracks them during all flights. I can't remember what it's called, but it was discussed during the Malaysia Airlines search. In this case, if it had been on this plane, the authorities would've known so much as everything was happening. I really feel for the families who are waiting for word.

Oops, just saw this. I'm impressed, too. They do seem to be trying to benefit from what was learned before.

i'm aware of ads-b, automatic dependent surveillance broadcast which sends out periodic broadcasts to enable it to be tracked. not sure how many planes even have this technology yet.

Oddly, I'm not, considering the complete ineptness that came before, I expected them to be way more proactive.

I've only talked to one person who had heard about this today. I turned on CNN for awhile, but turned it off when the two with the accents came on. They drove me crazy. Hopefully they've found it by morning.
