It seems that losing airplanes in that part of the world is getting to be something of the norm.

My understanding, and I could be mistaken, is that the tower lost contact with the pilot for 4 hours before declaring an emergency. That seems like a long time not to hear from a flight imho.
It was only a 2 hour flight!

Not sure I can find it right now, but the timeline I read said they lost contact about 40 minutes into the flight and AirAsia publicly confirmed the plane was missing about an hour after that (so they were working on it before confirming it). Someone can correct me if I'm wrong about this, though.
The search is on again. I pray for all those involved.

That has no bearing imho, they knew there was some kind of issue within a relatively short period of time.

That's correct, Sydney. They knew they lost contact within about 40 minutes and AirAsia confirmed it publicly within about an hour. I've been searching, and I see nothing that says otherwise -- do you know where you heard about a delay?

Uh oh. They knew. How does one confirm with a pilot who cannot answer. There certainly must have been some texting/phone calling going on by the passengers. Doesn't look good.

I first heard about the missing flight last nite EST, by the time online reports hit the net and social media I think they were already admitting to a significant period of time when contact had been 'lost'.

Yes, they knew and they confirmed it quickly. I don't see the problem, and so far haven't found anything on the internet to verify otherwise... perhaps someone else can?

air asia was on it immediately after they lost contact with the plane. they issued a statement soon after communication wasn't picked up again. air asia has been up front with this situation from the start in my opinion.

I agree completely, eve. Unfortunately, they're coming under immediate criticism and skepticism... probably as a result of the Malaysia Airlines bungling.
