Just a point of clarification and probably a typo here...the Airbus or any passenger plane cannot fly at an altitude of 80,000 ft. I know you probably meant 40,000 or maybe 50,000 ft. Not sure what the ceiling is for passenger airliners. But at 80,000 ft...there is not enough air to maintain the lift of the plane or probably even enough oxygen to maintain fuel combustion for the engines.
All sources I have heard do say the pilot asked to increase altitude to avoid turbulence due to weather. Can't help but think about those poor family members waiting at the airport to hear something. So sad.
The maxmium altitude for the A320 family is 39,000 feet. Lots of tech jargon from the FAA and Airbus websites, but several airlines, such as these, include it with their fleet information:
Thanks Frosty Babe! I wasn't sure what the ceiling was for the Airbus. I just knew it wasn't 80,000 feet, so thanks for the information.

Hi pitdakota....TRUE!
This was "my" typo error at (80).
I have been at the headquarters and just reviewed this. My husband rolled his eyes since we are a captain/pilot family for commerical airbuses.
I sincerely apologize for `that elevation lift`. My husband had told me when a request to ascend, the commerical plane cannot go that high because there is not enough LIFT over the wings...then it is uncontrollable. BUT, IN A SUPER EXPERIMENTAL PLANE, YES, ABSOLUTELY CAN! That was something I had remembered and tried to type very quickly due to this-> Q's window time, alotting so much time.................!!!
****If needed, this plane can, for a short time, go to 42,000ft high!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It had been a very sad day to have learned of this terrible news.
Thank you.

So now, the general belief is that it is likely that the plane is at 'the bottom of the ocean'. Possibly, but not everything sinks.
Dawg Lover - I also believe the triple 7 was taken and flown elsewhere. Just my feeling, just my hunch.

Not to sound like a conspiracy theorist, but have any of the networks mentioned if the current missing plane had enough fuel to travel to other "unfriendly" nations as well?
i believe they said that this flight had enough fuel for a 4.5 hour flight.

They said tonight the highest it could possibly go is 42,000 ft.

it's being reported that upwards of 40 bodies have been recovered thus far.

So tragic. At least they found this plane.
