I so enjoy your posts ...and I think it's awesome you live your life not based on a "#"...

I love to skate-- for years I was a involved & board member of NJ youth ice hockey leagues.  Of course, I was the fun locker room mom🙂 boy those were the best of times and my boys still coach & play to this day.

Keep going ...

@hckynut  Totally OT here, but thought of you today while watching drag racing from Norwalk, Ohio on tv.  I haven't watched for years, but really enjoyed it today.

@deepwaterdotter

Still love watching races. Drag racing was much of my life, along with hockey, for close to 2 decades of my younger life. Traveling the Midwest to races was a lot of fun. The only reason I quit was because when sponsors entered the scene, it just got too expensive for me to want to continue.

It was either get an extra job, or change hobbies. Not an easy decision, but working night shifts most of those years, for a single guy, minimized my time to socialize.

That is when I took up running and road racing. Better for my body, and thousands of $$$ cheaper, to compete with others in my age group.

Hey, when OT is auto racing?  I am all in.

I was raised that "the first 99 years are the hardest" if that's any consolation.

@hckynut Since I know zero about ice skating, I have questions. Do you skate like a hockey player, a speed skater, a figure skater, or some of all of the above. I only know what I have seen on tv so I need an education.

@On It

1. Do you skate like a hockey player? Yes

2. A figure skater? No

3. A speed skater?  I did win several gold medals in our State Winter Olympics in my age group for Speed Skating. Thar was for distances of: 100 meters/200 and 400 meter races. Medal in all 3, but could never win the gold in the 400.

I played hockey for years. Started my own Adult Hockey League when I was 22, and ran it by myself until I was 75 years old. I also was a Referee at all levels, from the 5 year olds, up to and included some college level games.

Any more questions about ice skating, I would be happy to answer the ones I know. If it's about figure skating? Not so much. But you can maybe ask "Icegodess"(not sure of exact nic spelling)

@homedecor1

Glad to hear you were so closely involved in your sons youth hockey program. Too few parents, at least around here, want to get that deeply involved. Some prefer complaining about just about anything and everything, but get involved? Nope.

Sounds like your sons are "paying it forward", following your unselfish example. All house league teams around here, when I was a Ref, were coached by volunteer parents. Some knew nothing about the game, but did the best they could. Without them, the youth program would have had a tough go.

I am not around it anymore, but I know it has changed, and too much to suit me. Back when I officiated, there was 1 Travel Team in each Division: Squirt/Bantam and Midget, which later became High School.

Now? I think they have every letter of the alphabet. From A Team to Z Team. A lot of it has to do with parents that were/are able to buy($$$$) their kids a spot on a Travel Team. It used to be based solely on a kid's talent/skills, and ability to play as a member of A TEAM, not an individual.

Do you still skate? Were/are you a lady that wears the skates with the Toe Picks, or the other?(🙂)? Not too many around here take advantage of the City Rink's "over 75 skate free" offer. Know of only about 5 right now, that includes me. 2 men that are 2 years my senior at 84, and 2 women. One I know is 83, the other is now 77, both figure skaters.

The younger of the 2 ladies worked where i did, at AT&T, as did her late husband. I knew them both from work. She also used to have her own Skate Shop inside this same building where we now skate. She coached and taught figure skating for many years.

All 3 of us men played hockey, way back when. 1 of them I grew up with in the Public Housing Projects. He played in my Adult League for many years.

Re: Ain’t as Good as I Once Was

My Mom passed when she was 99yrs old. She was in a nursing home when she was 97. My brother and I worried about this move. It didn't take long to realize that she adapted well. It was a small family run home. We soon realized that this was good decision. She quickly made friends with everyone. Her activities were dancing, bingo playing cards, hair done, nails polished, walks outside and having meals with the Doctor that was a patient. She exercised every day. My four year old granddaughter would go home and do the exercises. When she died my granddaughter asked for all of her religious things. She has them.
