Perhaps the OP heard something about filing on line and people using stolen social security numbers....

Regarding filing early.....

It can also help protect you from fraud. In 2011, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration found that the IRS had sent out roughly $3.6 billion to more than 1 million people filing fake tax returns using stolen Social Security numbers. The red flag often isn't raised until the legitimate taxpayer attempts to file with that same Social Security number.

"If you file early, it negates the opportunity for someone who's stolen your identity to use your information because you've already filed and you're in their system," Falanga says.

that is exactly what I was referring to in my first post on this thread.

Thank you, Biancardi, for acknowledging my post. SmileI guess Show Me is posting elsewhere. It would be nice to have an update from her as to whether this is what she was alluding to.

BlueCollarBabe answered for me.....and I thank her. The reason I haven't posted is because I sometimes have a difficult time explaining what it is I want to say.

Yes, it was what I was alluding to.

Mu understanding is that lots of the refund fraud has nothing to do with what you file yourself - it's coming from scammers filing pretending to be you.

They'll be surprised if they try that with my return. Wonder if the Feds will let them pay what I still owe. That would be lovely.

I think that some stations might not be giving all of the information here or if it has, it isn't communicated well.

If only someone pretending to me would file online and pay what I will be owing federal and state. That would be identity theft I could get behind.

Our Accountant of 25 years files our taxes electronically, we've never had a problem or issue. If anyone does their own taxes, they should do them on a secure computer. Password protected modem, preferably at home.

We file online and if you do file by snail mail, be sure to ask for a 'proof of mailing' slip from the USPS; just in case the envelope gets stuck or lost by the USPS-- you have 'proof of mailing' if the IRS comes calling and asks where is your return.

And for the really conscientious, you can ask for a return receipt requested which when received, the IRS will send you back the signed return postcard saying they have received your forms.
