I usually have four going at one time. One for my bike riding every morning, one at the office for during lunch, and most of the time two for just lying on the couch at the end of the day for enjoyment. Those couch books are usually to heavy in weight and reading material for my speedy bike riding in the mornings. Since I keep about 16 books checked out each week I have lots to choose from.

No, I only read one at a time....I used to have one for home and one for at work, but now I just read during the work week, I read on my lunch, and on weekends I read at night.......So just one for me at a time!

I stick to one at a time. That works better for me in keeping the story lines straight. I already have trouble if I’m into a book but have to wait more than one day before I have time to open the book—May have to go back a couple of pages to get back into the plot and mood of the story. Fortunately, I’m retired so that doesn’t happen very often.

I tend to have several going at the same time. Not only do I like to have something else going before I finish a book, but I find there are some books that make for good bedtime reading, while others are good to read anytime. I also think I sometimes have a tendency to have multiple books going when none of them is really engaging me.

No, for me it is and has always been one at a time.

I usually have two books going at a time. One on my Kindle Fire and an actual book that I have to hold.
Currently, I have four in process which is not my normal pattern. I have a hardback from the Library called Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon. It's not grabbing my attention yet so I am just a short ways into the book.
I have another Library book that I am reading called The snowman, by Jo Nesbo. I am really into this book. I should be finished by the weekend.
Then two romance books going on my Kindle.

I always have several books going. And I agree with @stevieb that I like to have another book already started when I finish one. It often happens that one of my books will interest me more than the others and I will usually read that one the fastest.

sometimes if they are two different subject matters

Sometimes, if I am reading a new book, I'll have an already-read book for bedtime. It's sort of like watching a rerun on television to quiet your mind. Otherwise, I might stay up all night reading the new book which isn't ideal for my life. Generally, though, I read one at a time because I read pretty fast and get pretty involved with the plot. I don't really want to leave that world and switch to another.

Not really. I can only read one book at a time. I like to put my whole self into that one book and concentrate completely on the characters and the story. I've tried reading more than one at a time, but to me it takes away from the books instead of enhancing them.
