To simply answer the question... At 47 I hate the look of an overly matte face on me. Just looks dry and cakey.
I prefer a shadow with shimmer or glimmer. I my new favorite in the Elf studio prism eyeshadow palette.
Also, I use a color stick with a shimmer as my blush. Since the shimmer can be a bit much, I apply the color stick first followed by my mineral makeup. The shimmer is still there slightly and it gives me a much brighter, awake look.

I'm all for a little brightening. Matte is fine, but if your eyes and lips are matte the face -- particularly one over 30-- can look tired and drab. Shimmer, luminizing, sparkle or any other name you want to give it can definitely perk up the face. The key is learning how far your face can go. The only way to learn the answer is to experiment. If you don't want to make investment in products and try things at home, experiment with shimmer products in stores where the customers can freely play with the testers.

A little glow is youthful.. plain and simple in my mind. But to each her own and what looks good on you. That's all that really matters.

I don't wear sparkly make up, especially eye shadow. It must be matte. I use powderless finish over my foundation for a matte look.

Do you have oily skin? That would be an exception. Plus youth. Very young women can go all matte and look great. I shouldn't make blanket statements, because everything depends on what looks good on you. We're all individual there.

There is absolutely a difference between makeup that adds sparkle and makeup that luminizes. I wear no sparkle, but luminizers do not contain the mica that causes the sparkle. It just gives a great dewey glow.

A very finely milled sparkle comes off as glow & luminizing, too. Like some of BB's illuminating bronzers, which are more of a blush color. Be sure to check it out carefully in direct sunlight. If you have large pores this is a big no-no.

I agree. It can be had to find them, especially if you're paranoid about sparkle bits, like I am.
