I stopped coloring my hair over 3 months ago and sometimes when I look in the mirror now I get a bit of a shock. Right now it's about 2 inches white in the front, gradually turning salt and pepper towards the back. The rest of my length is still auburn, but that will come off eventually. I'm looking forward to it all growing in silver. So far the most difficult change I've had to make is with my eye make-up. I'm used to wearing dark eyeliner under my eyes to define them, and with the white hair, that look is too harsh for me now. Gonna experiment with lighter colors.
Moonlady I went through the grow out phase and people complemented me on the two tone look! I rather liked it myself! I am having issues with makeup...I am not sure what to wear as far as shades..it all changes when your hair is silver. Does anyone have suggestions as to what colors help enhance your skin with the silver hair framing your face? I have blue eyes and fair to medium skin.

My grandmother had beautiful white hair. My mom decided to go all natural a few years ago and I think she looks beautiful. I say do whatever makes you happy![]()

Love this thread. I recently went silver after losing my hair after having chemo. I was going to color it the minute I was able BUT after it grew in I got so many compliments I decided to continue with the natural look. I love it now. I still have chemo curl so it's a bit hard to work with. But that will get cut off in time. My question is what products do you suggest using. Any particular shampoo's, conditioner's and styling products do you love? I want it to be a soft and shiny as possible.
I also agree, it's a choice and there is nothing wrong with coloring. I certainly did it for over 30 years. Right now I am just grateful to have hair that is nice and thick. So for me natural is the way to go.
Thanks
Liz

Good morning, Ladies!
Glad to see the new and improved thread. Also, I don't think I'll post from my tablet again -- my post above is almost unreadable. Sorry.
qtrmoonlady ~ thanks for the URL. I registered and am waiting for approval.
I'm 65. When my blonde hair started getting gray streaks years ago, I considered coloring it -- but friends said they loved the color and, honestly, so did I. I'm now totally gray and it's a kind of streaky silver. It suits me. I wear it in a short, sassy style that's 'wash-n-go.' I took my barber a photo of Jennifer Lawrence, the actress, back in January and said "that's the haircut I want!" And I keep getting it trimmed every 4 weeks in the same style.
Miss Lizzy - I hope you're doing well now. My mom went thru chemo in her 60's and her gray hair grew back in red! She joked about not having to color it any more.
Okiebug - I love your definition. "A Silver Fox is a woman who wears her hair it's natural grey and is happy with it and herself."

At 34 I had chemo and when it grew back in I felt it was too delicate and I was afraid to color it. I now have a full head of perfectly white hair that is healthy, soft and shiny. None of the damage done to hair from putting chemicals on it from dying or perms. Chin length, just wash and blow dry.
I bet it looks so lovely Happy Housewife!

Liz, I colored for over 30 years as well... I too am so thankful that now I can forgo all the chemicals in the color, and have healthy natural hair! The only thing that I make sure I use is a special shampoo by Pantene that is for silver/white hair. I found it at the drug store and it is very reasonable$$. It looks deep violet in color before you apply it, but do not worry, it does not make your hair violet! It helps to brighten and gives nice shine to silver hair. I use it every other shampoo.
My hair is quite short, so I never really have hair that is that old on my head to get damaged. I still use gentle shampoo and a good conditioner though just to protect my short hair.

I've been mostly white since I was about 35 - inherited from my Dad, who had the most gorgeous head of softly waved white hair I've ever seen. I was, and still am, proud to have inherited this trait - I've always thought Dad was the best looking man I've ever seen.
for a little while, when it was changing, I frosted it - until the day when my hair hairdresser casually mentioned that I didn't have anything left to frost. He suggested reverse frosting - adding a little color back in. I said no, and his answer was, "Great. I've always thought that God only put snowy white hair on the most beautiful heads." A sweet thing to say.
Today, and for the past 40+ years, I've been white - except for 50 or so cold black hairs that appeared on the very back of my crown - also a reminder of my Dad. Don't know when they came in and why, but it's a strange metamorphosis.

Like others, I recommend a "purple" shampoo to keep gray or white-ish hair sparkling. I used to use Clairol's "Shimmer" but have recently switched to the Pantene Silver (thanks to recommendations on this board). Both are fabulous!
