I agree with previous posters who say getting to the root of the problem is more helpful.
I do facials everyday and I think a good product with salicylic acid (in the correct pH) is imperative. For a lot of my clients I have noticed that not only salicylic acid is imperative but a good AHA product. Many times people start using a salicylic (BHA) and don't see the result they thought they would. That is because they have never used a good chemical exfoliant to take off the dead layers of skin and sun damaged skin. A good salicylic acid can only do so much and if it is fighting to get through layers of dead skin, it will not be nearly as effective. I love to start this type of skin on a good facial that I chemically exfoliate with a good AHA. That gets rid of the dead layer and really helps the BHA get into the pores to do its job.
My pores are in pretty good shape and to be honest I have never had much of a problem with them even when I was younger and I do have skin that is considered more on the oily side. I will say though since using Paula's Choice Resist Vit C15 (and there are other great Vit C serums) that it has really plumped my skin up and my pores are even more refined.
For cosmetic products that help refine pores, products like Mallys Poreless Face Defender are good for that too. Benefit has one too very similar (Dr. Feelgood Mattifying Balm) and Skinn does also. There are many professional makeup artists that show techniques on how to use products like the one mentioned above and even just powder with a clean puff can be used to achieve this look. Take a clean puff and apply a little of the MPFD (or powder) and press it INTO the skin.
