Re: Please stop telling us Medium is the default foundation shade

for what it is worth if you need to buy foundation online you should try www.findation.com

You enter the brand and color of a foundation that you use and that is a good match and then you can use the app to match you up to other brands of foundation.

Its worked for me and sometimes they do much better than the ladies at the makeup counter.

Re: Please stop telling us Medium is the default foundation shade

I am somewhere between light and medium. I guess I would call it "just before you get to medium". I buy 2 shades and mix them because, even though I am a cool pinky beige, I want a neutral canvas to work on. Not too pink and not too yellow. Once in a while I will find a foundation that is perfect but it is rare and it is aging to have a darker face on a white neck! For this reason, I don't buy foundation online any longer.

They say that because about 80% of Caucasian women wear medium. Many women say here they are a pink or cool toned skin type but in fact that is an unusual skin tone and usually natural redheads so I bet some think they are cool toned who are mistaken.

Then you're wearing too much. Medium Cool, Medium Warm....if applied lightly, there shouldn't be that much difference,

So absolutely false!!! If you have strong cool undertones, even a light dusting of a yellow based powder or foundation makes me look ill and stands out as a complete mismatch. I look like an odd colored ghost! And no-one wears less foundations on their skin than I do - actually I rarely ever wear them anymore. But when I wear anything even slightly tinted, it has to have cool tones or it just looks absurd.

SuzyQ nailed it that it is even more important to match your undertones than it is for depth of color. I can work with something that might be a bit too dark by diluting it (or too light) but nothing alters a complete mismatch of undertones.

Those who have neutral undertones might think it's not that big a deal but that's because they fall right in the middle and don't have a strong warm or cool based skin tone. They probably do have more flexibility in making a foundation work since their skin is in the neutral zone and can blend more easily.

That "default" comment is both silly and irresponsible yet it probably encourages some viewers to believe them enough to place an order. So they get more sales and know that many won't bother to return them. That's all that really matters to the hosts and QVC anyway.

I agree. QVC also carries limited shades from their bigger brands, so the color that's your best match may not even be available at QVC but sitting on store shelves, instead.

At least they stopped saying "Regular" for Laura Geller's Balance N Brighten line. She uses the term "Regular" on her packaging and website and it's ridiculous. It's bad enough that most brands don't carry foundations in enough colors for very fair women or women of color, but then to label medium as "regular" on top of that? That's just offensive.

Most adult women should know what shade they are by now. If it's your very first time buying foundation, you should go to a department store and have a representative help you in person. Otherwise, you should be able to make an educated guess as to which shade would work for you.

Re: Please stop telling us Medium is the default foundation shade

They are talking about white women who don't have very fair, procelain coloring and don't have a golden or natural tan color. Those women would generally fall into medium. And they usually say something like "80% of caucasian women". They aren't telling every woman in the entire world who doesn't know what color to buy that medium is her default color. That would be silly.....
