For many women access to dept. stores may be limited, if they live in rural areas esp. I'm in Hooterville and feel fortunate to have a mall 30 minutes away that at least carries dept. store skincare and cosmetics. Sephora is 2 hours away, 1 way.

I agree also and dislike when they say that. If Medium really works for almost everyone, then they don't need the other shades. At least it would seem that way. Medium can't work for everyone. I think they just want to get more orders and feel a large percentage of customers may not really like the color they get, but not take the time to return it. More sales that way.

ITA....every small town has some sort of name-brand cosmetics to give you a general idea. Walmart, grocery stores....living in little-town USA is not secluded like it was 50 yrs ago when I was growing up 50 miles from a grocery store. Medium is just that....medium. It's not rocket science.
ETA: if you're wearing THAT much foundation which creates a demarcation from the face to the neck to be concerned if you're cool vs warm..maybe you need to dial back the foundation a little bit. It shouldn't be that opaque on your face. Eeps!

The problem is most mart stores or grocery stores do not have samples. What looks right in the container, behind plastic often times is not.

Then you're wearing too much. Medium Cool, Medium Warm....if applied lightly, there shouldn't be that much difference,

I'm not even the fussiest person when it comes to such things, but there sure as heck IS a difference between cool and warm medium or any other shade. In fact, sometimes I think the undertone is as or more important than the actual shade.

good point!
I don't like when QVC says that about the medium either. Then they wonder why they get so many returns??

I wish Medium was a NEUTRAL shade .... in most cases, it's too YELLOW for us cool toned skin gals.
Or in some lines, Medium is much too pink. I remember when BE had only 4 or 5 shades. Light was way too light and a little too yellow. Medium was the right depth but way too pink. I went around wearing much too pink BE Medium for 3 years, until I discovered all the fabulous indy mineral make-up companies on line.
And I agree, they just sound dumb using that term - medium is the default shade. What a cop-out.
ITA! I thought you had been wearing the mineral make-up for a long time. Is Cory or Meow some of what you use?

You are right on all counts, SFC. I've been wearing mineral make-up since 1999. I switched from BE to experiment with several small indy companies in 2002. Two that I used at the start are no longer in business, however. But both Cory and Meow are still going strong. I use them both and have since 2006. They both have several formula choices and scads of shade choices.
If one cares to experiment and find their perfect match, samples are .49cents and $1.00 respectively. I think Cory has 25 or 30 (maybe more) foundation shades. And Meow has something ridiculous like 60 or 70!
I'm a Medium to Lt. Medium Neutral leaning towards Warm. I wear Naughty Siamese in Meow and Beyond Cream in Cory.
When I go the way of liquid or cream (non minerals), I use Dermacia in #4 Beige. Dermacia (and Lycogel) used to be available from sites like LovelySkin. They were discontinued or bought out by Oxygentics (I think, anyway). But some derms sell the original Dermacia in their practice or on Ebay, which is where I get it. Available at some spas too. I love having a couple different favorite foundations to switch around to avoid boredom. But I haven't tried anything else since 2006 for minerals and/or about 2008 or 09 for liquid. I've had no need to. I'm that happy with these couple HGs I've found...as long as I can still get them...that is.
