My salon is 70% "traditional" stylists who work for the salon, and you make appointments with and pay at the front counter. The other 30% (including my hair stylist) rents space each month, I pay her directly (yes including tip) and I make appts directly w/her via texts. (I know the percentage because I was nosy and asked)

I never knew there were different set ups having only experienced the salon and paying at the front desk. Maybe it's a regional thing. Anyway, I'll stop in today or tomorrow and leave or give him a tip. Now I know how this works. He specifically used the term 'self employed' which to me means no tip. I wouldn't tip a self employed plumber. I guess hair stylists are different. Thanks all.

@Bridgegal- Glad you've decided to stop by and give him the tip instead of waiting until the next appointment. It's the right thing to do and he'll appreciate it.

@Bridgegal Yes, you tip him. In some cases, you do not tip the owner of a salon. Some owners want a tip which is in poor taste.

My experience is the opposite. I've always paid at a front desk, no matter what the arrangement was between stylist/owner, and whether or not my stylist was the owner. I've been to all kinds of salons - from very high-end to basic walk-in places - and I've never been asked to pay a stylist directly. (When my sons were younger and I took them to barbers, there were front desks for payment there too.)
Either way, though, I've always given a tip, and I check to be sure I have enough cash for that before I go.
(I'm with those who think the OP should go back and give the tip now rather than wait until January. I think that's the appropriate thing to do, and would be appreciated.)

I would tip him double the next time you go in and let him know it was an oversight that you forgot the last time.

Interesting!
I finally found someone who can cut my hair. She owns the shop and is the only one there who cuts hair. Solo deal.
She books for an hour and I'm in there for an hour -- or even longer if her next client shows up late.
She hands me her phone so I can make the payment and there are amounts for tips.
I do tip. Probably too much, but I'm happy to find someone who isn't afraid of my hair.

I go to two different salons. One for color; one for cut.
My colorist is an employee. I pay at front desk and tip him. I've been going to him for twenty five years. Stayed with him when he was out for a long time with throat cancer. I think I'm the poorest client at what is a high end salon. He moved when the salon I saw him at closed. New salon owner charges extra for everything: e.g. flat iron. Really annoying but my colorist has nothing to do with it.
I go to different salon for cut. She's raised her prices almost twenty bucks since I started. She expects a tip even though she's owner. I only go four times a year so it's not a big deal. Now give her half the tip I used to. I could afford to be very generous.
I live in a high rent district; prices are competitive. What I don't get is I limit services when prices went up. Can't believe I'm the only one.
