After our recent move, I had to find a new hairdresser.   I went to a salon today for a hair cut and liked what the hairdresser did a lot!!!   I'll be going back.

When I got my purse to pay, he said that I pay him not the front desk as he works for himself.   We were chatting and I gave him cash, made another apointment and left.   On my way home I realized that I paid him the price of his haircut but forgot about a tip.

Now I'm not sure if I tip in this situation or not.  Where I've lived before I always tipped but the stylist worked for the salon.   Should I have tipped him?   Should I tip next time when I go for highlights????   I'm not cheap but just not sure show this works.   Thanks.

Hmmm, Do you think he owned the salon? Was there no cashier?

My hairdresser rents a chair at the salon where she works.  I always pay her directly, along with a tip.  During the many years I have gone to her, she has done this at several salons.  I think it is fairly common.

I agree with Tedsmom's comment.  It's fairly common for hairdressers to rent a chair in an existing salon and they pay a percentage to the owner.  I would definitely tip.

My hairdresser just recently sold her business and now rents a chair there.   She and the hairdressers who used to work for her - are now all independent in the same salon.

I tipped her even when she owned the shop!  She's a fab hairdresser.

This is the way all the salons in my area operate now.  I always tip my hairdresser.  She is merely a tenant in the salon paying rent.

I would go back and give him a tip.

I don't think he owned it.  There was a front desk where you checked in.  There were only two hairdressers and one manicurist working.  I didn't see any one stop at the front desk on the way out but I wasn't looking.

Based upon comments here ,  I should have tipped.   I've never seen this before.  I don't think I'll go back just to tip him but when I go in Jan. for highlights I'll give him a tip for both visits.  Thanks.
