I wash my makeup brushes, usually every two weeks or so but I do use a tissue or paper towel to wipe them off, especially foundation brushes.

 

I bought a Danielle brand makeup brush holder at Winners but I looked and it's also sold on Amazon. The disk that holds the brushes is reversible so you can dry your brushes brush head side down so that water doesn't run into the ferrule. You can store them brush head side up if you want to. I only use it to dry brushes.

 

It can collapse and pack flat as the two end caps undo from the disk. Here are some photos to show you what I mean:
