I use an oil first, like avocado oil, then I apply something heavier on top, like shea butter. Then I put on a pair of those cotton gloves you can get at the drug store or Wal-Mart. It seems like the 1-2 punch of putting the oil on first to sink in, and then putting something heavier and more protective on like the shea butter, works wonders to heal skin that cracks open and bleeds...it just takes a few days for the cracks to heal. I've also been known to use Alba Un-Petroleum Jelly on eczema spots and on dry hands, feet and elbows. It is pretty greasy though...but it works.

All of the above products I purchase inexpensively from LuckyVitamin.com, but I'm sure they are available inexpensively at plenty of other sites as well. I like these products because they are natural, inexpensive, multi-purpose...and most of all, because they work.
P.S.-- I started my own thread on this very topic a year or so ago...it took me awhile to figure out that I wanted to use natural stuff, and that there are plenty of inexpensive natural products out there that work better for me than the usual drugstore or high-end stuff I'd been using for years.
P.P.S.-- I use each of these products on my face and body, and I no longer see the need to purchase high-end, highly-marketed "breakthrough" products.
ETA-- If you use single-ingredient products, like the avo oil or the shea butter, your odds of having an allergic reaction, rash, drying, breakouts, etc are slim, because each product has only one ingredient. If you do have a reaction, you'll know it was either the oil or the shea butter...very little investigation required.

My husband has the same problem as uses Udder Budder (Butter?), a cream that dairy farmers used on the udders of their cows (by direction of his internist). DH purchases it at a local AG store, but I bet it can be purchased on Amazon. His hands have never looked and felt better, since he's been using this product.

My older brother has very dry hands and some cracks in the Winter as well. Changing to a "natural" soap helped him a lot--something like Tom's of Maine or Kiss My Face that are vegetable based helped a lot. One hand cream I really find helpful is First Aid Beauty's--it's a basic body cream and available on the Q. Also available on their web site. Several people have mentioned avocado oil, olive oil and shea butter. Products with fragrance or lots of additives tend to make my hands dry so the natural items are much more soothing or me.
One more thing I thought of is latex gloves. My hands were in the worst shape and had tiny bumps when I used the yellow gloves for dishwashing. It was either the lining or latex--you might want to rule that out for yourself. Once I stopped wearing them my hands improved quickly.
Good luck!

Ouch!!! I know exactly what you mean. Sorry you as well as other's are going through this. My hands have been just awful this winter. Nasty deep like paper cuts too on tips and sides of thumb/fingers, and YES, they hurt like crazy. Like needles going into a paper cut.
My husband and I have been using Cracked Skin Relief Crème by Dermae'. They sell it at our co-op and also some health food stores. Runs about $13 to $19 a 2oz jar depending on where you purchase. D e' carries a whole line of natural skin care products. It takes a few days, but it does work. Sometimes I have to use the liquid bandage just to get them to start healing. Then I just slather up w/the hand cream. Also have Working Mans hand cream on hand and it too helps keep moisture in.
With all the excellent recommendations by other's, I sure hope you get the help you need. This seems to be the worst dry winter I can remember. Always have had issues in winter w/my hands, but this is way beyond the norm.
Good Luck MidnightShadow
