Re: Help for EXTREME dry hands, please.......

My Dermatologist suggested this and it works for my extremely dry hands:

Soak your hands for just a minute or two in warm (not too warm) water (I just fill the bathroom sink), pat dry, then apply plain Vaseline and rub it in really well. If your hands feel too gooey, wipe off the excess. When I'm just going to be home, I'll also wear 100% cotton gloves to help with the gooey-ness of the Vaseline, especially at bedtime. As time goes by, you'll need a much lighter layer of Vaseline.

Avoid putting your hands in water as much as possible, and wear vinyl gloves for dishwashing, etc. I also use the disposable vinyl or cotton gloves for chores to avoid getting my hands dirty and thus the need to wash them so much.

Whenever you do get your hands wet, re-apply the moisturizer - whichever one you choose.

I'm allergic to so many things that just plain ol' Vaseline works for me.

I hope you find relief soon, as I know how miserable this is!

Also, wear gloves whenever you are outside in the cold, even when you are in a cold car.

If you live in a cold climate, always wear gloves when you go outdoors. Always. The gloves don't have to be fancy. I have many pairs of cheap stretchy knit gloves stashed in every coat and in my purse and car. Sometimes I lose them but I have lots of spares. Wear them even if you are out for a few minutes to get the mail, walk from your car to a building, etc. The cold air really dries out your hands otherwise and wearing the gloves also keeps my nails from breaking.

Put absolutely loads of any old lotion on, doesn't matter how cheap as the effect is the same - it's the quantity that matters, and wear those thin white cotton gloves (e.g. from The Body Shop) over it.

Keep the gloves on for at least half and hour and overnight too if you can.

You can also do this if you're going out to dinner or something and you want your hands to look good when you get there. Glop up and glove up before you leave and drive/travel with the gloves on (you can pull on winter gloves over the top if needed) ... then whip them off as you arrive.

I totally agree with the posters who recommend Working Hands. It's wonderful for cracked hands and dry feet. I use it every day and night.

I use olive oil soap and L'Occitane shea soap for hand washing- much less drying than antibacterial or bar soap!

All of these suggestions I have tried. I have hand dermatitis...have been to the dermatologist and have been on several hand steroids, a round of prednisone...off the round of prednisone and it came back. My family Dr. gave me an Rx for an ointment and it helps....put it on my hands at night with cotton gloves, and pretty much anytime I wash my hands. Better but not healed. I also soak my hands in oil for 5 minutes 2x's a day. It's strange because it's on my right hand on my thumb, fore finger and middle finger and left hand the thumb and fore finger. It's been going on for 2 1/2 years now.....started to eliminate products to see if I am allergic....curses....it's very painful and very embarrassing!

I'm also a huge fan of Neutrogena Swedish hand crème. It's the best thing I've found.
