just want to add - ASH in haircolor can be green or blue based. ASH may grab and make your color muddy looking especially if the ASH is green-based.
i also used ASH blonde box color once and the result was a flat blah brown.

Ash brown on me went "witch black" !
But, you are right. In the sun I could see colors that should NOT have been in ash!

@Deree Ash will cut the orange. However, it may be a good idea for this one time to go to a salon and have it corrected.

Hot roots are tricky.. See a professional.
Some suggestions on this thread will only create more problems.

Go to a salon, and have a pro fix your problem, then you can resume you at-home hair coloring.

@Deree Pay to have the booboo corrected....and ask for future suggestions as to how to keep up the root coloring. But fix it professionally first.
I was in in the same boat as you 5 years ago....I had long hair too.....I used permanent color at my roots to cover grey about every three weeks. I used an med ash brown permanent color. My REAL color was Silver. I would run the color through the rest of the hair every other time I did my roots. I had to use Joan Rivers hair powder everyday as well as coloring the roots as the color just would not take to the 👩🦳 white hair well at all. It was so frustrating.
FINALLY I gave in to the silver.....cut my hair short....and regrew my hair out long.... WHITE.
BEST DECISION EVER. No more mess....no more battle...

Sorry haven't been here in a few weeks. I have been highlighting my dark blonde hair for many years and I'm quite good at it. I have long hair that I pull through a cap. In the past 2 years, I haven't put as many highlights in which worked to my benefit with this hair color mess..
First I used Paul Mitchell Clarifying Shampoo twice and it definitely lightened the orange hair to the same tone as my own. Then I put in more highlights this time around and I was able to successfully camouflage the orange. Plus I can style my hair to cover it as well. So it worked out this time. Whew. I don't think I'll ever mess with permanent color again. Certainly not Clairol.
Thanks for all your suggestions.

@Deree wrote:To any hair colorists out there or anyone with a lot of hair color experience. I had a minor disaster yesterday and was advised how to correct it but would like your opinions.
I have long hair. I've been coloring my hair with semi-permanent color for many years (Dark Blonde). I colored my entire head the first time and since have only colored the roots. Results have been excellent with L'Oreal products. Then they discontinued them.
By now I have gray around my hairline. I switched to Clairol Natural Instincts and the color matched perfectly too but it washed out in literally 1 washing. Clairol advised me to use Nice and Easy Dark Blonde (permanent color). I've been really scared to start with permanent but have little choice. I used it only around my hairline yesterday and now I have an ORANGE !!! hairline.
I called Clairol and was advised to use Nice and Easy Ash Blonde #9. I'm really afraid to do this thinking I'll wind up with some off color like green. In the meantime I have ordered Paul Mitchell Clarifying shampoo to hopefully strip some of this color.
Your thoughts? Thanks.
I also have long(ish) dark blonde hair and have been coloring it for 25 plus years. The only color I ever attempt on my own is to touch up my gray roots and I use either the spray root touch up or the semi permanent one that washes out in about 2 weeks. I've had in the past one really bad color job (by hair stylist) that made me too blonde and then tried to fix it and made my hair the color of a copper penny. I rushed home and found a color correction specialist to fix it which took two appointment in two days. It sounds like you're trying too many different problems and it seems like they're not intereacting well with one another. I'd go see a professional at this point.

Ladies please don't color your own hair!! Seek a professional that knows what they are doing!

As you get more grey you'll need permanent color or just go grey. Demi permanent and Semi permanent are not meant to cover grey.
