Thanks Pippin....I'm off to Vitacost.  Herbatint does have beautiful shades and rich colors.  But what really sold me is the no harsh chemicals.  My hair has not been damaged over the years with haircolor as a result.  Thanks again for the heads up!

@feline groovy

I understand exactly what you are saying. My hair is coarse and grows quickly. I use a great shampoo and conditioner but the color does fade and I also have some gray hair.

I was shocked at the price of having my hair colored in the small community I live in. The  salons charge $100 plus depending on the length of your hair.

The hair color from Whole Foods might be a good option.

I have looked on a website named I Read Labels or something close to that and there are harmful chemicals in hair color.  She explains what she finds harmful and why.

The beauty supply company is another option too.

Most importantly, I would start with a good shampoo and conditioner. If you would like a couple of recommendations and prices let me know.  I buy my products from Amazon.

This post I have written is confusing and I apologize. The company my DH works for had their annual function today and I am tired. I will look tomorrow after some sleep and see what your thoughts are and try to help you if I can.

Hope you are doing well!

Wow, I pay $65 for a color, cut and style.  Not a new fancy place but he does a great job.

@ugabugabooooo  That's exactly what I do too. My hairdresser has been doing my roots lately, but I used to do them all the time. Roots only!

Because the rest of my hair gets too light in color, even though I'm careful to keep it from fading too much.

Brunette shades look the best when they have a deep richness to them.

Plus, as I've mentioned, I can't afford the salon on a consistent basis.

Hair grows and fades with time, which is why even "permanent" hair color isn't actually permanent.

@feline groovy  I see your point. I have a friend who was a hairdresser years ago.  She once said to do the roots then fill what's left in the bottle with a little shampoo and water and run through the ends. Said that's what they were taught to do years ago at beauty school and it works well with less damage. Never tried it though.

I would be careful with mixing two different types of hair color since most permanent hair colors use a stronger strength of bleach and some brands of color are ammonia or non ammonia based.  Don't mix the two.

I color my roots every week and I don't pull the color through. I only do root touchups as I have long hair and there's always some overlapping. Pulling color through already colored hair would make my medium brown hair too dark.

If you want to try a permanent color on your roots only and then after you wash that out and dry your hair, then use a semi permanent on the rest of your hair, that might work.

Why not follow the directions - 25 minutes on the roots ONLY - then pull the color to your ends - let sit 5 minutes.  Rinse.

Pulling it throught the ends every time will really damage your hair over time. You're reapplying that color many times over the span of a year or two, if you're coloring your roots every 8 weeks. Unless your hair is very short in which case, it's cut so frequently it's not an issue.

You not telling me anything new !  I have long hair.  I do a double process every 6 weeks.  I hit the roots then pull the color out to COVER THE BLOND HIGHLIGHTS - YEP !

After I get the head all one color I dive in with some BLOND highlights to give my hair dimension.  I get compliments all the time on hair - and they ASK ME who does your hair ?  When I tell them I do they freak out.

The BIGGEST THING is to make sure you are doing regular maintenance on your hair.  I swear by Wen - I wash my hair 2x a week.  I also use a VERY VERY light cover of coconut oil during the week.  Depending on where I am going will depend on weither I wear the hair straight (yep I am ironing my hair)  or bouncy (curlers) and if I will blow out the hair.

I wear my hair up or in a messy bun all - mostly in the summer.

My roots appear to be almost GRAY - I cannot tell but I do want to cut off a lot of the hair and go a shade of gray until I can go all natural gray.  I was already given an estimate of $400 to process in the salon.

That method is used and suggested by many hairdressers.  It minimizes damage to the hair and prevents the ends from getting too much color.  Only use color on the ends when they need it.

I have (over the decades, LOL), but just thought that since I only need permanent color and its longer- lasting gray coverage on the areas I mentioned, it would be healthier for the rest of my hair to use a less-drying form.

Girlfriend - walk NO RUN to a Trader Joe's or some place that sells coconut oil.   Place a wee bit onto the palms of your hands and rub together then gently apply to your hair.

REMEMBER - small tiny bit.  A little goes a long way ... and do not forget the ends.

I should be doing this too - but I am living dangerously.
