@jaxs mom wrote:I'm not sure why you'd want to do this? When you say semi permanant are you actually meaning demi permanant like Natural Instincts? A true semi permanant is going to fade quickly and It's going to look odd having permanant on part of your hair and fading semi on another part. But maybe I'm not quite understaning what you're going for?
Yes, Clairol's 'Natural Instincts'. Thanks for the alert to my typo - I corrected it.
I thought it would be better for the health of my hair, especially the ends.
Which are trimmed on a mostly-regular basis, BTW.
My apologies in not expressing things more clearly. ;-)

I only do the roots. I never run it through the rest of my hair ever. Why not just do roots? I do roots twice and the go to my stylist and she does hilights and lowlights so I cannot run it through the roots or I will mess up the highlights. I have never understood why you would need to retouch the already permanent colored hair again unless you needed to lighten or darken it for some reason.

@feline groovy Even though my hair is blonde, I have the beauty shop only color my roots. As @jaxs mom said, it is hard on your hair to continue to color the bottom part.
Have you thought about going to the beauty shop for help?
And I know with darker hair your roots do show more than on blonde hair.

@NameAlreadyTaken wrote:You can really get some interesting colors when using a permanent and a semi-permanent on the same head of hair. You may qualify for a grant of some kind. These are chemicals, different chemicals. Best thing to do is let a professional do your hair when you have no idea what you are doing.
I do know that they're two separate types of processes.
I've gone to salons on and off, but salon color doesn't fit my current super-tight budget.
You're assuming that I'm a newbie at hair color , but I agree when it comes to total neophytes.

I get my hair color at Sally Beauty, under the assumption that it is a more professional product. I do my roots, then the 5 minute comb through because my hair color fades a bit during the six weeks between coloring. I used to get my hair done at the salon, but the cost went through the roof! I paid $140 for a haircut and color the last time they did it. I can get the products at Sally for less than $10 and do it myself. My hair is in excellent shape.

That's smart, @Sister Golden Hair, and it's nice that grays in flaxen hair can often look like highlights if they're not too ashy in tone.
Especially with shorter hair lengths.
I haven't asked for local salon advice just yet , since I dont have a regular colorist and just go to Great Clips for trims and cuts.
Affordable and decent, at least in my experience.
Yep, those gray/silver/white buggers are more noticeable in darker hair, LOL.
Thankful I don't have a huge amount of them so far.

I'm using Herbatint that I purchase at Whole Foods for $18.00 and it looks as good without the harsh chemicals and the $150 bill. My hairdresser who trims 1/2" off my long hair every 6-8 weeks says it looks great. It covers gray and I only do roots every 4-6 weeks pulling it through only right before I shampoo it off to freshen the color of the rest of my hair. I recently went from 8n to 7n as the blond was looking a little too light throughout the few weeks. I love my hair color (very natural) and my budget loves it too.....$10 for trim $18 for color every 6 weeks! Whole Foods has supplied my hair color for the last few years and I've been really satisfied with the results....wouldn't let a salon touch it!

I absolutely love Herbatint.Vitacost has it for about 10.oo dollars.I get lots of compliments when I use Copper Chestnut. Also it is made in Italy and doesn't have many chemicals.Strangely I fly to Italy often to visit my elderly mother but I never see Herbatint sold there, even in the health food stores.

Because the rest of my hair gets too light in color, even though I'm careful to keep it from fading too much.
Brunette shades look the best when they have a deep richness to them.
Plus, as I've mentioned, I can't afford the salon on a consistent basis.
Hair grows and fades with time, which is why even "permanent" hair color isn't actually permanent.
