Here's a new healthier method I was hoping to try:
1.
Apply permanent color to just my grays.
(the roots surrounding my face + on top of my head)
2.
Apply demi-permanent color to the rest.
------
Question #1:
Can I safely use two different brands?
(trying to keep my budget in check)
Question #2:
Can I actually apply one right after the other?
(do the roots first, then the rest)
------
I've searched online, but any advice or tips here would also be appreciated.
Thanks. ![]()

I don't think the 2 types of dyes are compatible and I would not use both at the same time. You can call the 1-800 phone number on the box of dye to make sure.
Just wondering why you'd want to use the 2 products at the same time. It seems to overly complicate the whole hair color process. I don't get what hair color has to do with health.

Why not follow the directions - 25 minutes on the roots ONLY - then pull the color to your ends - let sit 5 minutes. Rinse.

I'm not sure why you'd want to do this? When you say semi permanant are you actually meaning demi permanant like Natural Instincts? A true semi permanant is going to fade quickly and It's going to look odd having permanant on part of your hair and fading semi on another part. But maybe I'm not quite understaning what you're going for?

Pulling it throught the ends every time will really damage your hair over time. You're reapplying that color many times over the span of a year or two, if you're coloring your roots every 8 weeks. Unless your hair is very short in which case, it's cut so frequently it's not an issue.

You can really get some interesting colors when using a permanent and a semi-permanent on the same head of hair. You may qualify for a grant of some kind. These are chemicals, different chemicals. Best thing to do is let a professional do your hair when you have no idea what you are doing.

My guess is that OP is concerned with applying permanent color all over her head. I have that same concern. Although the Demi permanent color, like Natural Instincts doesn't cover gray nearly as well, it will blend gray hair with what's left of the original color. The other key is to use as light a color as possible. It seems the darker colors are the most dangerous. That said, my great aunt died her hair jet black for the last 50+ years of her life, living well into her late 80's or early 90's! If you are truly worried about the color, have the hair pulled heavily through a frosting cap, then have color put on that hair. That way the least amount of product will touch your scalp.
There are some safer, more natural coloring products made but they all have Henna and I'm allergic to Henna! I hope someone finally figures out how we can be beautiful and healthy! I'm not vain at all, it's just my hair is truly hideous gray! The front is like white cotton in color and texture! The top is salt and pepper. Under that, above my ears is all white, but silky. Then, the back of my hair is the color of black coffee! Not exactly stunning! I scare small children and all animals with my hair naturally gray!😳

Because permanent all-over color, then permanent root touch in-between, is more drying to your hair and scalp.
My wavy naturally-dry baby-fine hair is fragile enough, LOL.
I do take good care of it, though, including supplement-wise.
Thanks for your recc; sorry if I confused you.

I have (over the decades, LOL), but just thought that since I only need permanent color and its longer- lasting gray coverage on the areas I mentioned, it would be healthier for the rest of my hair to use a less-drying form.
